Press Release                                  January 17, 2012

Run United Rallies Filipinos to “Exceed Yourself” in 2013

Longer distances and focused approaches mark this year’s run races

Mark your calendar runners, the 2013 Run United series is set to bring in more excitement and a lot of surprises to this year’s running calendar. Unilab Active Health (ULAH) and RunRio Inc. promise longer distances that are big on fun and prizes, starting off with 2013 Run United 1on March 17 at the Mall of Asia grounds in Pasay City.

Ever responsive to the runners’ feedback, Unilab Active Health and RunRio are now focusing on longer distances to be in step with the requirements of progressive runners who want to better their personal records and outdo themselves in every race.

“We noticed a trend during the previous years’ races that the slots for longer distances get filled up faster. There were instances when we had to open up more slots. So, by focusing on longer distances, we will be able to accommodate more runners,” said Alex Panlilio, Head of Unilab Active Health.

Coach Rio dela Cruz added: “This is in line with our plan to be part of the growth and journey of Filipino runners. It just goes to prove that the local running community is more mature, that is why we also launched the Run United Philippine Marathon (RUPM) last year. Filipino runners have leveled up.”

Thus, there will be no more 3km category in Run United, but it will retain the 500-meter dash for kids to make them start having an active lifestyle early on. The race categories for 2013 Run United 1 include 5km, 10km and 21km; for Run United 2 (10km, 21km, and 32km); and for Run United Philippine Marathon (10km, 21km and 42km).

If runners loved the singlets of previous Run United races, they would definitely rave about the improved singlets this year, which are made of new fabric designed to help improve the performance and comfort of the runners.

Better and useful items will still be part of the finishers’ token. And the unique united medal will still be given away to encourage participants to complete the series. Of course, the Unilab Active Health villages will still be jampacked with activities and freebies for the participants and their families.

The complete Run United 2013 race schedules are as follows: Run United 1 on March 17, Run United 2 on June 2 and Run United Philippine Marathon on October 6. Prior to these, The Bull Runner Dream Marathon will kick off on February 24.

For triathletes, Tri United 1 2013 on March 10, 2013 and Tri United 2 2013 on July 7, 2013 both will be held in Playa Laiya, Batangas. Tri United 3 2013 on October 26-27, 2013 in Subic and the fourth and final leg of Tri United will be fired off in Ayala, Alabang on November 24, 2013. Moreover, Unilab Active Health Duathlon will be on September 8 at SCTEX, Clark, Pampanga.

Brooks Happy Run Recap

It’s tough to be at the receiving end of criticisms and complaints specially if you’re the Race Director of a major race that didn’t live up to expectations, even if it wasn’t the RD’s fault at all. At last Sunday’s Brooks Happy Run, the 15k runners who were already lined-up at the start were told there would be a slight delay before they would be fired-off. Five minutes had passed, then 10 and the runners became restless. Doc Marvs and i were standing just outside the starting line waiting for these runners to start so we could also prepare and line up for our 10k and 5k races which were to follow.

Fifteen minutes had passed and the runners were beginning to get incensed. I was looking at the 2 DJs nervously as they were continuously harping on other things to entertain them which only further agitated the runners. They should have just given an explanation why the delay was taking so long.

Little did we know that the cause of delay was happening a few kilometers from the starting area. It seems that the group which was contracted to deliver the water and set-up the water stations arrived late and had to scramble to get these ready before the runners arrived. This was relayed to us by one of the Brooks organizers, Julius who had just arrived from the area and hurry back to the starting line.

Race Director Thumbie Remigio had to make that crucial decision of delaying the start as he didn’t want the first wave of runners to reach Buendia Avenue without the water stations set-up first. So there. Definitely no fault of Thumbie’s but the delay have a trickle-down effect and it showed during the race. I was told that the water stations at the 15k route were set-up at irregular intervals, some of them had even run dry and marshals were not in their proper places.

Good thing for us 5k runners, there was nary a hitch on our run and except for the late start, we had adequate supply of water, markers were present and the marshals were at crucial positions of the route. I’m sure Thumbie will be able to improve from here as he has delivered well-received races in the past. Here are some pictures of the race:

The 15k runners were waiting patiently for the gun start

Crowd of runners have now swelled up to the tail end where the 10k runners already positioned themselves

Not even the banters of DJ Chloe helped in pacifying the runners as Doc Marvs, Jay Em and myself waited for our event to start

Brooks Run Happy Race All Set

During the early 80s when i was just starting to join the first running boom, i wore the Brooks “Vantage” which was one of my first running shoes. Back then, it was available at most SM Department stores and retailed at around P600-700 a pair. I liked the feel of it and along with the Saucony running shoes which was also available during those times, it proved to be a very good alternative to the Adidas and Nike brands which were the top picks of those times.

Since being re-introduced two years ago, Brooks has garnered a lot of accolades and has elevated the brand as a top choice among discerning runners of all abilities. An industry leader, Brooks is responsible for unveiling many breakthrough footwear technologies. In 1975, Brooks pioneered the use of Ethylene Vinyl Acetate™ midsoles (EVA) which is now an industry standard. Brooks’ patented cushioning technology HydroFlow®—which functions like a hydraulic shock absorber upon impact—debuted in 1989, and Brooks introduced PDRB® in 2002 to control excessive pronation. In 2006, Brooks tackled midsole innovation once again with the debut of MoGo, a midsole compound delivering increased cushioning, more energy return, and less fatigue—without sacrificing stability. The latest entrant to the midsole lineup, BioMoGo launches in July 2008 as the first-ever biodegradable running shoe midsole.
