Rexona Takes Music Powered Run to The Next Level

(Press Release)

On October 26, immerse yourself in a trail of pulsating beats and scintillating visuals that will push you to go further into running euphoria at one of the most sought-after runs in the calendar, the Rexona Run To Your Beat 2014.

Taking Rexona’s Do More philosophy to the next level, Rexona Run To Your Beat 2014 will once again challenge you to stretch your limits at a music powered run that pushes you further while you stay fresh. Mar Corazo, Rexona Brand Manager, says, “We are always finding ways to make the Rexona Run more exciting than the last. This year, we wanted to take the Do More philosophy into higher gear with stimulating visuals to match music from different genres, as interpreted by some of Manila’s top DJs.”

1st tunnel: Hip Hop themed tunnel

This year, Rexona has chosen to collaborate with the Republiq group and the top DJs in the Philippines to fuel your run with live music. Pushing runners to the finish line will be DJs Ace Ramos, Mars Miranda, Deuce Manila, Martin Pulgar, Euric, Motherbasss, and MC Pao.

2nd themed Tunnel: Retro Disco

To make things even more exciting, Rexona introduces three new tunnels with varying themes that will make the music come to life. At key points during the race, runners will be able to experience the Retro, HipHop and EDM themed tunnels that will have different features, from roller bladders to disco balls, street art to laser light. But of course, only those who can do more can enjoy all three tunnels. 5K and 10k runners will go through two tunnels, while 21k runners will be able to experience all three!

3rd Tunnel: Lazer light themed tunnel

Gun start for 5k is 3:45 AM, 10k 3:30 AM and 21k 3:00 AM. Interested runners can register online at http://www.runrio.com/rexonarun starting September 8, today, until October 12, 2014. Rexona Run 2013: The Street Concert Run!

Music, as they say is a motivational force that elevates your mood with excitement and gives you an upbeat feeling. When listening to music while running, it acts to synchronize your stride rate with the music beat that can help you run farther and faster.

This is going to be the new concept to be offered to runners for this year’s Rexona Run 2013 edition to be held on October 20, 2013 wherein live bands and DJs will be stationed along the route of the race giving runners a concert-like atmosphere, head-banging to the music while running as they complete their race distances.

No head-phones needed, no worries about cars on the road, just music blaring out on the route for you to enjoy! At the end of the race, there will be a party with live music playing almost non-stop!

PRESS RELEASE:

From the gun start to the finish line, this year’s Rexona Run promises to push running enthusiasts, professional runners and recreational runners to DO:MORE.

Mar Corazo, Rexona Brand Manager says, “We are always finding ways to make the Rexona Run more exciting than the last. This year, we wanted the Rexona Run to appeal to more people and inspire them to Do:More.”

As one of the most sought after races in the Philippines, runners look forward to the Rexona Run every year for its exciting twists, prizes and categories.

On October 20, 2013 at the Mall of Asia Grounds, be prepared for a different kind of race—the Rexona Run To Your Beat, the Philippines’ first ever multi-sensorial after-midnight run where live music pushes people to run further and culminates in a party at the finish line.

With a local DJ as one of the performers

Woohoo… playing beautiful music together! :)

“This was inspired by the insight that when you run to the beat of the music, you run faster, you go further, you’re energized to do more,” said the Rexona Brand Manager.

From the first gun start at 3AM, live performances will be scattered around the race track, adding a very different take on running. The 5k race will have performances by Delta Street, Sandwich, The Diegos, DJ Mia Ayesa, Deuce Manila and DJ Nina.  The 10k race will get the chance to run to Funk Avy and DJ Khai.  While the 21k race will see all performances, as well as the finale concert of Rico Blanco, Elmo Magalona and DJ Mars Miranda.

Coach Rio, Rexona partner and running expert says, “It’s been proven that listening to music unleashes your energy, allowing you to run further.”

In line with Rexona’s DO: MORE philosophy, Run to Your Beat presents the perfect avenue for all individuals to DO:MORE – whether you’re an avid runner or leisure runner.

Run to Your Beat is also the ultimate test of Rexona’s efficacy because the product keeps you dry and fresh from the start of the race until the end of the party.

To register, visit Riovana stores located in Bonifacio Global City and Katipunan, as well as Tobys outlets in the SM Mall of Asia and SM North Edsa The Block. Online registrations are also accepted on www.runrio.com. Registration is ongoing until October 13, 2013.

Rexona Heavy Medal Run!

This is by far the only race that i got late at the start! Together with team mates Leo and Sylvia, we actually arrived at the Mall of Asia, 45 minutes before the 21k gun start but Leo had to make a stop-over at his condo which was a few hundred meters away to do some more of his morning ritual while Sylvia and i were jogging and stretching at the road in front of the building.

When Leo came back, we knew we had 15 more minutes before the start of the race so we hurried back, parked the car at a designated parking lot and walked to locate a porta-john for the last minute relief. We were about a hundred meters away from the starting line and when i was about to enter the portalet, the loudspeakers suddenly bursts into a long siren indicating the race had started! Dang! I saw a glimpse of the mass start and here i was all tensed-up, still inside the cubicle!

I hurried outside, sprinted to the starting line where marshals were waving at us to hurry up cross the starting mat. A full 5 minutes had passed since the start so me and a sprinkling of others who were also late tried to step up the pace and play catch up with the early starters.

No sooner had i reached 2 kms when i over-took a good part of the tail enders leading out to Buendia Avenue Extension towards Roxas Blvd. I had to weave my way out along that narrow side street perpendicular to Roxas Blvd and had to dodge the orange cones several times. At this point, i was now in the middle of the pack and slowed down to my regular groove.

I would say that the first 10kms was a bit crowded as we snaked our way with the other runners up those bridges along Roxas Blvd. but despite the traffic, race marshals did a fine job controlling the crowd and the traffic specially at the junction of Macapagal and Buendia Avenues. Nice to see those water bottle “grenades” again at the 10k mark which was handy enough for you to carry along the route.

Water bottle grenade

The route was quite familiar to me along this side of Macapagal Avenue all the way to the end of Seaside Boulevard and back, having ran this race last 2010. It was an absolute high seeing some friends on my way back, high-fiving, waving and all! Bananas were abundant and like the RU3 32k race the previous Sunday, many banana peels were still strewn along the route despite of the garbage chutes located near the water stations. When are runners going to learn?

Really felt very tired at the last 2 kms and i was just struggling to keep pace although i seem to get hold of a second wind during the last 300 meter straight before the finish which gave me more gas to overtake many runners. Another half-marathon done!

As with these Rexona races, the lootbags were more than substantial and the post race program was lots of fun, food and music!

Rexona loot bag contents

And i almost forgot the medal! Wow, this is one heavy metal, maybe the heaviest medal that i have ever received, a good 300 to 400 grams! It felt real heavy that you could use it as an assault weapon and  hammer it at the head of anybody who tries to inflict harm on you!:-)

The Rexona medal

Over-all, the race was superb, very-well organized (as expected) and let me say that these may be one of this year’s most enjoyable race, one to look forward to in 2013!

This coming Sunday will be the Adidas King Of The Road race and i’ll be running the 16.8k distance. There will be some other races scheduled for next month before finally getting on with the Run United Philippine Marathon on October 28.

Have a great run, you all!:-)

Rexona Run 2012: On September 23* at MOA!

*(Re-scheduled to September 23, 2012)

Recently, i was thinking about races organized by Runrio which had a great impact on runners in terms of enjoyment, after race festivities and the active support and participation of its main sponsor. Outside of the Unilab Run United Series, the race that comes to mind is the Rexona Run, sponsored by Unilever.

21k, hot sizzling route, it’s always an event to look forward to plus you get to bring home all of their underarm deodorants in all variants after the race! The race was often accompanied by some kind of post-race contests of adventure trips locally and abroad.

Well, this year’s race set this coming September 23, 2012 at the MOA will see another attraction when they present the 21k relay wherein 2 runners (both male or female or mixed) will run about 10.5kms each and vie for the 1st Rexona relay championship and win fabulous prizes.

Also, Pacers will be deployed to help runners achieve their running goals for the 21k Individual Category, 21k Relay and the 5KM race. For more of the pacer details or those who would like to volunteer to act as Pacers, check out the Runrio site on Facebook, here: http://runrio.com/2012/07/wanted-rexona-run-2012-volunteer-pacers/ or Vima Mendoza’s Kulit on the Run blog.

This will be another memorable race, one Unilever will undoubtedly put its all-out support and make all runners happy and sweet-smelling!

Here are the details of the race:

Rexona Run 2012 challenges you to outrun yourself

Prepare to push yourself to the limits when Rexona Run 2012 unfolds on September 23 at the SM Mall of Asia grounds.  Presented by Rexona Men, the much-anticipated event promises to raise the bar even higher.  With a new category, more prizes and exciting features that will surely test the mettle of even the most seasoned runners.

Participants can choose from among three race categories: 5K, 21K Solo and for the first time ever, the 21K Relay.  The new category is designed to inspire 5K and 10K runners to raise their level by taking part in the more challenging 21K race, where a team of 2 runners will run a relay for them to finish the 21K distance.

Apart from cash prizes and medals for the top finishers, commemorative key chains will also be awarded to finishers who manage to beat the recommended finishing time for a challenge.  To qualify, 5K runners must cross the finish line 30 minutes after gun start at 6:20am, and all 21K participants need to finish within 2 hours at 7:00am.

To ensure that each participant keeps within their target finishing time, pacers shall be deployed for each race category.

Helping runners train and commit to a faster finishing time, Rexona Run 2012 has created the Rexona Run Outrun Yourself App, which can be downloaded for free via the Rexona Men Facebook page.  The app will help runners set a target time for the category to be run courtesy of a running playlist and occasional voice over as their time check, which they can listen to while training.  During the actual run, the app can also be used to help runners set their pace.

More than just promoting wellness through running, Rexona also strongly espouses the responsible running.  For Rexona Run 2012, trash bins will be placed in strategic locations so runners can properly discard used water bottles, sponges and other trash.  This gives runners a cleaner and more pleasant race route, now and in succeeding editions of Rexona Run.

“Each year, Rexona manages to raise the bar and this year will be no different.  We not only made this year’s race fun, exciting and safe, but we’re also introducing new developments that will surely inspire running enthusiasts, both professional and recreational types, to strive to outrun themselves,” says Rexona brand manager Anne Remulla.

Prizes for the top three finishers in the 21K Solo include Php 7,000 for first, 5,500 second and 4,000 for third, while the podium finishers in the 21K Relay take home Php 5,000 for first, 4,000 for second and 3,000 for third for each member of the team.  Top three finishers in the 5K category go home with Php 4,000, 3,000 and 2,000 for first, second and third placers, respectively

Registration is ongoing until July 29 at Riovana stores in Bonifacio Global City and Katipunan and Toby’s branches in Trinoma and SM Mall of Asia.  Online registrations are also accepted at http://www.runrio.com from now until 12 midnight of July 22.

So this September, get ready to challenge and outrun yourself only at the Rexona Run 2012.

Rexona Run: Finishing Rem’s Race

Remembrance for a runner

One of the principal marks why running is enduring is because of races like last Sunday’s Rexona Run. Coach Rio has become a great eminence as a Race Director, surviving lapses in his past races and now, the innovations he brings to the sport like the I-Pad registration, Registration ID and the D-Tag to name a few, have brought running to a higher level.

I had highly anticipated this race and i wanted to get an appraisal on my level of fitness by running another half-marathon. I had about 6 hours of sleep the night before which was enough considering i would be waking up at about 3:00am to meet up with my group later. So we arrived at the Mall Of Asia at about 4:45am. Betty, Mel, Tonette, myself and another running friend, Marsha used the remaining half-hour warming up, taking care of other business as everything was in place–an air of fun and tension greeted us 21k runners.

L-R: Marsha, Tonette, Betty and Mel

The group after the race

A few minutes before the start, a friend from Takbo.ph, Captain Tere approached me and Mel. She gave us a black armband and tied it into our biceps. Written on it were the words “Run 4 Rem”, a tribute to a runner who collapsed while running the 21k Milo race last month and died two days later. I don’t know Remus personally, but i’m sure he would have ran this race were he still alive today. The armband was a nice token of a tribute.

The start and finish area

When the gun was fired off at 5:15am, it took us nearly a minute to cross-over the starting line as we positioned at the very rear of the pack, then settled into our paces once we had passed the start line. The route itself was now familiar to us, having ran it 2 weeks prior although there were last minute changes as we were told that we couldn’t enter Pacific Avenue anymore (it’s the road where my 2 “Katipunera” friends had an argument with a guard who wouldn’t let us in initially).

With this advantage of knowing the route before hand, we settled into a comfortable pace and typical of Rio’s races, the water stations were plentiful and spaced at just 1.5km intervals so you never really worried when the next water station would be. The Powerade drink was cold and overflowing at each station.

With Betty and Marsha. The arm band has slid down my wrist.

With Darryl Panado who came in 33rd over-all

I had to occasionally adjust the armband as it was now sliding down my wrist as if i am constantly being reminded of Remus. I am not superstitious nor prone to believe in spectral occurrences but i really felt like a spirit was running with us looking at our pace and even hearing our breathing and wanting to say “you’re doing good, keep it up”!

The last 1.5 kms was the most difficult as we had to take the same U-turn along Seaside Blvd before heading to the finish. However, i felt a big pull during this time and at the last 100 meters, Marga of takbo.ph even ran with me up to the finish! I finished the half in 2:17:43 (chip time) and bested my time from my 2 previous half-marathons, the Earth Run and the Nuvali Greenfield Run where i did identical 2:21’s. A four-minute improvement and a big one for me! Mel, who paced Betty all throughout were not far behind and they checked-in at 2:19, a PR for Betty!

While getting our loot bags, i asked Mel what he thought about the race and he said one word, “Remus”. He said he felt a simmer of his presence, like somebody was watching our every move—exactly how i felt too. I wasn’t alone.

This day, we both felt his spirit and finished his race!

A bagfull of sachets!

The Race of the Groin vs. the Armpits!

It was only a matter of time!

Hold your breath now, but after Lactacyd (a product line for feminine wash) launched its Women Team Run Relay and All Women 5k Open which caused an uproar amongst our male macho runners because it was an exclusive race for, you guessed it, women, Rexona-Men Deodorant (Unilever) has now launched its own Rexona Run which will be held on August 01, 2010 at the Mall Of Asia grounds. Thing is, the Rexona Run has the marketing savvy to open the race for both sexes!

So, is this going to be a war of the loins versus the armpits?

The Lactacyd Team Women Relay details of which i had blogged recently (lactacyd) will be held this Sunday, June 27, 2010. It’s an all-woman team relay for females ages 18 to 45 and venue will be  at the Venice Pizza Mall, McKinley Hill. Each team will run a combined distance of 21K. The first runner will run a distance of 10K, the second runner will run 5K, the third runner will run 3K, and the fourth (or first) runner will run another 3K. There will also be a 5K individual run category.

Not to be outdone, Coach Rio, organizer of the Rexona Run will introduce “firsts” on this race i call “Rionovations”:

RIONOVATIONS

1.  The use of an I-PAD for Registration: Once you register in their authorized registration centers, you will now enter all your details in an i-pad, instead of writing it in a registration form. All paper-less, it’s now just typing your name, address, age, singlet size and other info into the i-pad with registration personnel assisting you if you happen not to be computer savvy. All details will be stored in a data-base so once you enter another Runrio race, there’s no need to re-register again.

The new paperless registration system using an I-Pad

  2.  Times will be recorded in a D-Tag (not championchips anymore) another RFID timing system which is not incorporated into a race bib but is attached to your shoe. It’s the latest of timing devices used in several major marathons in the United States and elsewhere.

The new D-Tag timing device and how it should be folded

 3.  Soft plastic water bottle. Shaped like a grenade, you can just punch a hole on top of the lid and drink from it.  After taking a few sips, you can use it again by hurling it like a grenade if someone cuts you off at the water station!:-)

Water grenades! (Pics from blog of the running fat boy--thanks)

 4.  Runrio Fans Club cum Membership Card: Just Rio’s way of thanking the runners for their support of his races. The card in return can be used for discounts from a few selected establishments and earn points for every Runrio race you join.

Rio's fans: Que, Vener and Jet

By the way, the Lactacyd and the Rexona Runs are both organized by Coach Rio. Well, depending on whose bushy hair you’re inclined to support, both runs are expected to be well-organized. Since i can’t join the Lactacyd Womens Run and can’t apply Lactacyd in my armpits either (the lotion would have made a fine lather), i’ll be at the Rexona Run doing the half-marathon. Male runners, you can all breathe now!

See you all!
