Century Tuna Stages Inaugural Ironman 70.3 Triathlon

In yet another move to make the Philippines a premier destination for triathlons in Asia, Century Tuna has upped the ante by staging the Century Tuna Ironman 70.3 which will be produced and organized by the premier triathlon organizer in the country, Sunrise Events.

Wilfred Steven Uytengsu, Chairman, Century Tuna Ironman 70.3 Philippines and President & CEO Alaska Milk Corporation

The inaugural Century Tuna Ironman 70.3 Triathlon to be held in Subic Bay, Philippines will host some of the best triathletes in the world come March 8, 2015. The event features a fantastic course where athletes swim 1.9 kms at the Subic Bay-Sands of Triboa, bike on an undulating course towards the turn-around at the Florida Blanca interchange and finish with a challenging 21 kilometer run with great views of the ocean and end back at the Sands of Triboa.

Subic Bay was selected in order to offer the athlete and their families a unique, safe and fun experience and for them to be able to visit other parts of the country. Tour packages will be provided for those who wish to make the trip even more memorable.

The Century Tuna 70.3 will not be an easy course, specially the bike parts! There will be portions that athletes will be walking their bikes on the climb coming back to T2 but will still be offering ample flat sections for proper recovery.

Whether you are enjoying the scenic view of Subic Bay or the rural areas of Zambales, this former home of one of the largest US military facilities outside of the US mainland has something for everyone.

MANILA, Philippines (February 18, 2015)—After three years of supporting the 5150 Triathlon, Century Tuna advances further to stage for the first time the Ironman 70.3 triathlon event in Subic Bay this March 8, 2015. The Century Tuna Ironman 70.3 is the latest addition to the growing number of races in the thriving triathlon scene in the Philippines.

The half-Ironman distance triathlon, also known as the Ironman 70.3, is among the world’s most exciting races, attracting hundreds of thousands of athletes and supporters year-round. It has been staged a number of times in the country, bringing in professional triathletes from all over the world and slowly building a reputation as a hot triathlon destination in Asia.

“Century Tuna has supported the triathlon and fitness community in the Philippines for years now as a way of remaining committed to promoting a healthy and active lifestyle for Filipinos,” said Greg Banzon, General Manager of Century Pacific Food Inc. “We felt it was time to offer Filipinos a bigger challenge that keeps pace with the expectations of the community. The interest so far, which includes that coming from the international triathlete circles, tells us that the inaugural Century Tuna Ironman 70.3 triathlon event is met with high anticipation and excitement, and will soon be part of the triathlete’s calendar.”

In next month’s Century Tuna Ironman 70.3 in Subic Bay, over 20 professionals of various nationalities are expected to arrive including three-time Ironman World Champion and two-time Ironman 70.3 World Champion Craig Alexander as well as superstars such as Luke McKenzie and Caroline Steffen. This makes the Century Tuna Ironman 70.3 in Subic Bay the most competed triathlon race in the country by virtue of the number of professionals at gun start.

The international field of professionals and even age groupers serves as a perfect backdrop for the Century Tuna brand as it expands its presence in the world market. Century Tuna is now exported to 48 countries including the USA, Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, Italy and most countries in the Middle East.

Subic Bay has been chosen as the perfect destination for the event due to its accessibility but more importantly because it offers the ideal terrain with its calm waters and well-maintained bike and run routes.

The course includes a 1.9 kilometer swim, which will start and end at Sands of Triboa via the Subic Bay Airport to Transition 1. The 90-kilometer bike ride will commence on the runway heading to Argonaut Highway, Rizal Highway, Subic-Tipo Expressway all the way to Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX). Participants will then make a U-turn upon reaching Florida Blanca Interchange, and head back to Transition 2 at the Subic Bay Exhibition and Convention Center (SBECC). From the SBECC, participants will take on a 21-kilometer run to the finish line.

On top of the prestige of finishing the Ironman 70.3 race, the Century Tuna Ironman 70.3 in Subic Bay, Philippines will also serve as a qualifying race for the Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Zell am See-Kaprun, Austria. Thirty age-group qualifying slots are at stake, along with a $15,000 prize purse for the event.

The event is slated to span over four days from March 5 to 8, 2015 at Subic Bay, Philippines. The Century Tuna Ironman 70.3 is produced and organized by Sunrise Events, Inc. and made possible through the support of a number of sponsors and partners including: Vita Coco, Gatorade, 2Go Express, Saucony, Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority, Manila North Tollways Corporation, North Luzon Expressway, Bases Conversion and Development Authority, The Philippines Star, ABS-CBN Sports+ Action, Asia Tri, Endurance Magazine, Century Bangus, Sante Barley, Prudential Guarantee, Department of Tourism, Tourism and Promotions Board of the Philippines, Timex, David’s Salon, Mini Cooper, Auto Hub, Smart Communications, PLDT Subictel, Intercare, FinisherPix, Shotz, Devant and Belo Skin Care.

NatGeo Earth Day Marathon : April 26, 2015

I was able to run and finish the inaugural NatGeo Earth Day Run  42k Marathon distance which they added last year and i still vividly remember how well organized this race turned out to be. Ice-cold water and Pocari almost every two kilometers, enthusiastic and courteous marshals and the ever present medics–they did a hell of a job, all made a huge difference for making last year’s race an over-all success!

This year’s race, the NatGeo Earth Day Run 2015 will be held on APRIL 26, 2015 at the Mall of Asia grounds. On-line registration is now open while in-store registration starts on March 16, 2015. One major change for this year’s edition is that this race will now be organized and directed by RUNRIO so expect this to be as well-staged as last year’s event.

Now on its 6th year, the National Geographic (Nat Geo) Earth Day Run is expected to attract more than 20,000 running enthusiasts of all ages and fitness levels to participate for the good of the environment.

NatGeo Run 2015 Race Organizer Coach Rio dela Cruz giving out details of this year’s race edition during last night’s race launching

This year, Nat Geo is working once again with its environmental partner, World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), to make a solid difference in the Philippines’ environmental footprint and give sustainable livelihood opportunities for local communities. Proceeds of this run will help improve the livelihood of the minority Mangyans of Occidental Mindoro and for the protection and conservation of the nearly extinct Tamaraw animals.

A Closer Look At the Trails of Mt. Sembrano

Here’s a set of pictures of the trails of Mt. Sembrano in Pililia, Rizal taken by Ninya Regalado, a mountaineer and trail runner during one of her mountain trail runs. I’ve always been intrigued as to why many runners, hikers and mountaineers enjoy visiting this place as they say it’s so hilly, open and hot specially in the summer. But having seen these photos of the trails, i can see that they offer some of the best views here in these parts.

The forthcoming 2nd DBB Uphill Mt. Sembrano Trail Race Challenge on April 18, 2015 will prove another opportunity to see and conquer this rolling grassland hills to the tilt. And through these pics, you’ll see why last year’s runners have been raving about the ascents and descents that literally kept them on their toes!

Check out the views over-looking Laguna Lake, Talim Island and the other mountain ranges which are arresting and very scenic.

You’ll see why running this upcoming 15k and 30k DBB Mt. Sembrano Uphill Trail Race Challenge is worth it when you see these picture postcard worthy sweeping views. I’m nowhere close to being able to run this trail yet, but that will surely change when i get to run with some of the most fun and serious trail runners come April 18!

See you there!

Registration is still open. For more details, you can check my previous post at https://jazzrunner.wordpress.com/2015/02/05/mt-sembrano-trail-run-challenge-april-18-2015/ or the event FB page at https://www.facebook.com/events/814150221978573/

Pinkberry: The Very Best in Frozen Yogurt

Whatever the weather and the occasion, frozen yogurt is one of life’s all-season pleasures! When i say i adore “Froyo” (frozen yogurt), i know i’m not alone.

Having been invited by Public Relations maven Nana Nadal with other bloggers to sample the new frozen yogurt products of top froyo bar, PINKBERRY at SM Megamall, i was delighted to see that people were trickling in and queued patiently to take out their newest offering, like the Pinkberry chocolate chip cookie yogurt and the toppings that goes with it.

Chocolate chip cookie with toppings

Pinkberry’s frozen yogurt bar at the 5th floor of SM Megamall’s Fashion Hall occupies a tiny space, a cross between a 70’s ice-cream kiosk and a quaint coffee shop tucked in a corner almost facing the huge ice-skating rink. You can choose to sit on any of its 3 tables or on some tall chairs in a window bar from where it’s fascinating to watch the skaters whiz by or tumble down the ice-skating rink.

At the entrance of Pinkberry-Megamall Branch

Delectable combinations are a mainstay, and flavors–including the butter pecan with glazed pili nuts and toasted almonds with caramel sauce were expertly balanced! The butter pecan with bananas and light agave was also superb.

The sundaes are reasonably priced, and they’re satisfyingly grand, generous in servings with premium toppings such as fresh fruits, chocolate chips, toasted almonds, nuts and brownie bites.

Mouthwatering folds of fresh, delectable fruit toppings undulate across Pinkberry’s selection bar. If you can settle on just one, you must be very miserable!

More toppings to choose from

New Products:

Warm Apple Pie and Fudge Brownies topped with frozen yogurt!

Just this month, Pinkberry released new desserts: Warm apple pie and fudge brownies topped with your choice of freshly swirled Pinkberry yogurt.

Pinkberry Apple Pie a la mode captures the classic taste of apple pie. The base is made with real baked apples and cinnamon crumble which is then topped with your choice of Original, Vanilla Bean, or Salted Caramel yogurt and a drizzle of caramel sauce.

New Yogurt Flavors:

Chocolate Chip Cookie and Butter Pecan

Aside from the two new desserts, they have two new yogurt flavors worth checking out.

The Pinkberry chocolate chip cookie yogurt provides an innovative way to enjoy your favorite cookie. This flavor is made with real cookie pieces for a delicious, creamy and sweet taste. No dunking necessary! Chocolate Chip Cookie Pinkberry can be enjoyed on its own or topped with Pinkberry’s premium toppings such as semi-sweet chocolate chips, mini milk chocolate gems, cookie dough, honey almond granola, whipped cream or chocolate sauce. Mix and match them to create a new taste experience each time.

Butter Pecan Pinkberry is a smooth maple-noted yogurt with roasted pecans that embodies the indulgent, velvety taste of the classic ice cream. Butter Pecan Pinkberry can be enjoyed on its own. To give it a different dimension, you can top it with caramelized pecans, bananas, toasted almonds, caramel sauce, or light agave.

Butter Pecan

Our sampling of the Butter Pecan

Later, we were asked to make our own Pinkberry concoction and we were impressed by how this was done by the staff. The fruity burst of flavor in a cup of freshly swirled Pinkberry Yogurt, topped with 3 selection of fruits of your choice was the best thing during the taste test! Swirling it out from the machines with our own hands, the original flavor is specially creamy, the fruit bits were fresh and juicy and enhanced with additional left-over almond bits which were lying on our table.

The Kiwi and Mango bits combined had a good kick while the tangy original taste with the strawberry is another blissful union!

Introducing, the “Jazzrunner” Yogurt Special!!

Our thanks to Mikki S. Montenegro, Marketing Specialist for Pinkberry and to her staff at Megamall. Big thumbs up for their friendly, professional service. Thanks too to Nana Nadal of the nananadal Public Relations & Events Management for providing us the venue for keeping our heads light and our tummy full!

Asics AP01 SPM Training Watch: A Short Review

Asics AP01 SPM Training Watch

One of the latest addition to L-Time Studio Boutique’s array of its sports watch collection is the Asics AP01 SPM Training Watch and it has plenty of meat to its slim, sporty frame. Quietly introduced locally last 2013, this watch made a resounding debut last February 1, 2015 when the L-Time Studio (cum Soleus) Runners wore this watch and the Team shirt during the Condura Skyway Marathon.

Asics sports watches have become very popular in many countries specially for young athletes who are into running, biking and racing. It’s no wonder why many Japanese athletes are into it’s concept and have embraced it as their sports watch of choice. The AP01 has a unique style and purpose in the Asics line with very interesting specifications that is less about being fashionable and more about being reliable and useful.

“ASICS watches are designed in the tradition of the technologically advanced, high-quality ASICS shoes that have earned the allegiance of many of the world’s top athletes. Their run training watches, which include the AP01 and AH01, have been developed in collaboration with the ASICS Institute of Science in Kobe, Japan.

The goal and objective of the ASICS Institute of Sport Science is to research, study, and analyze the biomechanics and movement of the human body. All of this work is done for the main goal of improving the training, performance, and enjoyment of both professional and recreational athletes all over the world”, as quoted from the Asics Institute of Sports Science.

Now, let’s see what this particular watch does. With all the functions and cues this watch was meant to represent, the AP01 SPM is meant for running. Everything about this watch directs you to train properly and judiciously. It’s stylish but rugged appearance points you to its three (3) stellar features:

The AP01 SPM Trainer very accurately measures your steps per minute (SPM) and Speed and Distance while you run so you can learn your optimal running stride rate. It manages your pace, running efficiency and reduce the risk of over striding.

SPM Function:

By sensing with the built-in sensor the acceleration generated in the runner’s body during running, this watch measures the number of steps taken, and converts it into the SPM Data (the number of steps taken in 1 minute). It also enables you to control the exercise intensity during running. Using the SPM Data and the data measured with the 1/100 sec chronograph function in combination, you can run in different paces, either faster or slower than usual as desired.

PACE and Distance Function:

Using the algorithm developed by ASICS Institute of Sports Science, this watch can estimate the running pace and the distance run on the basis of the SPM measure during running. The estimate of the distance varies depending on the course and weather conditions and it should be noted that it serves as a general guideline only.

Shoes Impact Meter Function:

You can see how worn out your shoes are from the conditions of the outsole and the upper, but it is difficult to know to what extent the cushioning performance of your shoes have deteriorated. The Shoes Impact Meter indicates the reduction in cushioning performance of your shoes using an index based on such data as total number of steps.

Other great features this training watch possess include:

Double Repeat Timer Function:

Two timers repeat counting down the set time alternately.

Change-over Between Two Time Zones:

The current time of two time zones can be set in the Time mode.

3-Channel Daily Alarm Function:

The alarm can be set to ring at three different times of the day. The alarm of each channel can be engaged or disengaged independently of one another.

300-Lap Memory Function:

Up to 300 measurement data can be stored in memory.

More features here:

  • Plastic case
  • Aluminum bezel
  • Stainless-steel caseback
  • Acrylic glass
  • Urethane band
  • 5bar Water Resistance
  • SPM (Steps Per Minute) measurement
  • Estimated Pace & Distance measurement
  • Shoes Impact Meter
  • Time display (dual time)
  • Chronograph (300 lap memory)
  • Data (recall / SPM, Estimated Pace & Distance , 300 lap memory)
  • Timer (double repeat timer)
  • Alarm (3-channel daily alarm)
  • Backlight
  • Power saving function
  • Display contrast adjustment
  • Two-year battery life

There’s something very enticing about wearing this sports watch that optimizes you to perform effectively. It gives you a sense of pace in real time, knowing when to adjust whether to go faster or slower and having control of your steps to get maximum results.

The Asics AP01 SPM watch on yours truly 🙂

The L-Time Studio-Asics Running Team at the recent Condura Skyway Marathon 2015

You can purchase this watch at just under P5,000.00 at any L-Time Studio Boutique. For its price and features, i cannot recommend the Asics AP01 SPM enough specially if you are particular about pace, stride rate and perceived effort of your runs. It’s one important tool for runners on training!

The Sierra 50K Relay and Half-Marathon: Few Slots Left

One of the most anticipated races this year will take place at the hilly roads of Tanay, Rizal where the Sierra 50k, 5-man Relay Race and the accompanying 21k and 10 races will happen on March 1, 2015. I’ve ran on these roads many times before and this will be a very challenging ROAD race through and through!

It’s a very tough course but if you have trained and raced in mountain trail races, it won’t be anything you can’t handle. One of the perks of running this race that other run events don’t typically have is the magnificent views of the Sierra Madre mountains.

The course takes all runners from the beautiful Ten Cents to Heaven Leisure Camp (start) to the beautiful mountain roads of Marcos Highway, inside a Baranggay Road and back to the scenic highway. The route goes past hilly gorges and mountains, through rustic vegetable farms and a lake view.

Few slots left and registration will end on February 25, 2015! Don’t miss this race!

Ateneo Run For Your Life 2: The Ateneo to UP Campus Run

The Ateneo School of Medicine and Public Health (ASMPH) in collaboration with Run Rio Events announced last night the launch of “Run For Your Life 2,” a run-for-a-cause, which will take place on March 1, 2015 at the Ateneo de Manila campus in Quezon City.

At a news conference for bloggers at Shakey’s in El Pueblo, Pasig City, Professor Chris Peabody of the ASMPH invited avid runners to participate in this worthy cause, whose proceeds will raise funds to aid scholars of the ASMPH. This fund raising event will help academically excellent but financially needy scholars sustain their education and make a difference in improving the health system in the country once they become medical professionals.

What makes this foundation different is that it doesn’t only give scholarships for the deserving poor, but sees through a student’s medical education until he/she graduates and in return will give back to other deserving students once they establish themselves in their respective medical fields.

The race will start at the Ateneo de Manila Campus, goes out to Katipunan Avenue then goes inside the University of the Philippines Campus and back.

Registration is now open for all categories until February 25. Here below are the details:

Registration at SM North and MOA is at TOBY’S Store
