Two of our Triathlon athletes, Nikko Huelgas and Claire Adorna both bagged the country’s first gold medals at the SEA Games this weekend. These are the first ever gold medals won by the Philippines at the Games in the sports of triathlon! Another Filipina, Kim Manrobang placed second to Adorna and bagged the silver medal.
Triathlon is a relatively new sport at the SEA Games where we won medals in 2005, 2007, and 2015. In 2005, Sandra Araullo took a silver medal and Arland Macasieb the bronze. In 2007, George Vilog bagged a silver medal and Arland took the bronze, while Sandra again won silver and Maria Lucas took home a bronze.
Today, while we celebrate the victories of triathletes Nikko, Claire and Kim, we await our athletes in the field of athletics who will compete at the 28th Sout East Asian Games starting today and are expected to put in some decent if not, top notch performances. The athletics team are expected to garner at least 8 gold medals.
Just before their departure for Singapore a few days ago, part of our Philippine delegation, our athletics team in particular, were given a sound send-off, spearheaded by L-Time Studio and Veloci Watches. A total of 36 of our best athletes are represented in athletics spearheaded by our marathon contingent consisting of Eduardo Buenavista, Raphael Poliquit Jr. and on the distaff side, Mary Joy Tabal.

With Dr. Philip Ella Juico’s ascendancy to the post as the new Philippine athletics chief, members of Team Pilipinas athletics are all fired up to accomplish a spectacular performance in the upcoming 2015 SEA Games.

If the remarkable athletic achievements of the Philippine athletics team in recent international competitions are an indicator, Team Pilipinas Athletics stands to collect eight (8) gold medals in the upcoming biennial meet in Singapore. Banking on the solid and still improving best performances from the 36-strong athletics team, this scenario will be an easy feat. And with a few turns of good luck, a 12 gold medal haul possibility may not even be remote. The best finish of the Philippines in the SEAG was in 1983, also in Singapore, where it garnered 11 gold-12 silver-9 bronze medals.

Among the disciplines where the Philippines could strike gold are (men) hammer throw, 400m, 400m hurdles, 3000m steeplechase, 4x400m relay, decathlon, long jump, 800m, and pole vault.
Considered as swing events, where a bronze medal is at least a high possibility, are (men) marathon, 1500m, 4x100m, 110m hurdles, discus throw, shot put; (women) long jump, 10,000m, and heptathlon.

The 2015 SEA Games will officially kick off on June 5. Two days after, the mettle of Team Pilipinas athletics will start to be tested. But as they have proven already, nothing is impossible with dedication, focus and tangible support. They have surpassed all challenges and obstacles before. The strong desire to bring honor to the country had carried them through. And this time around, the Philippine athletics team’s morale is at an all time high. The odds are in our favor and our time is now.
