Yes, this paradise island is part of Mindanao which is now under martial law as declared by President Duterte since a week ago, where Philippine military troops are still clashing with militants under the terrorist group Maute in Marawi.
However, Siargao Island is far removed from the present going-ons in Marawi and is known to be a peaceful and insurgency-free place with many tourists, both local and foreign trying to strut their wares in what the island is known for, surfing! Aside from hosting several international and local events in surfing, Siargao will also host an international marathon to be held on July 23, 2017.
The Siargao International Marathon (Run For The Mangroves) 2017 is a fundraising campaign organized by the Municipality of Del Carmen together with Runrio Events, Inc. and Open Space Media Inc. for the benefit of their mangrove rehabilitation in Del Carmen. This is the 1st Siargao International Marathon following the success of the first Siargao It Up! Marathon last year.
I’m very optimistic that this turbulence happening in Mindanao will end very soon and martial law will be lifted way before the event proper. Here’s to peace in Mindanao!
