Under Armour Celebrity Crossfit Challenge: Part 2

“Strong is not the new skinny! You don’t get strong because you’re lean or it’s sexy, or because it’s the new cool thing.. You get strong because you strive hard to get strong. And strong is awesome. Strong needs no further justification!”

This may well be the same conviction that these celebrities believed in and it showed during the highlights of the Under Armour Store opening at SM Megamall recently when celebrities from showbiz and sports pitted strength and endurance against each other in a friendly competition dubbed the UA Assault Crossfit Challenge!

The Celebrities, all wearing the latest of the Under Armour gear were:

Men: John Hall, Eric “Eruption” Tai, JC Tiuseco, Will Devaughn, Luke Jicain, Carlos Agassi, Gerard Pizzaras, Ervic Vijande, Luis Alandy, Paolo Paraiso, Ernie Lopez, Armand Del Rosario

Women: LJ Reyes, Roxanne BarceloBubbles ParaisoIssa Litton, Maria Persson.

Many of them will look familiar to you, specially if you watch soaps on television and they’re not just your ordinary heartthrobs with killer smiles and sexy bodies,  but they’re regular habitues of Crossfit, a cross-training workout that emphasizes bursts of high-intensity exercises. This work-out incorporates plyometrics, weight lifting, cardio, kettle bell exercises and interval running, among others. The gains here are tremendous strength and stamina and the results are fast!

It was no surprise then to see them carry heavy loads, twice or thrice their body weights, do multiple sit-up and squats with weights over their bodies performing at levels you wouldn’t think are possible, specially for the ladies who sometimes outdid the men in some floor exercises! By their sheer body strengths, you know that crossfit isn’t new to them, that they may have been into it for many years prior to this event.

I love how excruciating all the challenges were, you can just see their faces grimacing and screaming out loud, all in terms of difficulty, strength and styles. The challenges included multiple burpees, bear crawls, dumbell split lifts, ball sit-ups, box jumps, dumbbell thrusters, heavy bag drills and many more!

I had a front seat, a few feet to where these gladiators were doing their thing and here are the moments that had me on my feet:

One of the heart-pumping challenges that got spectators to its toes was this 50+lbs heavy bag drill which you carry on both arms, thrust it up into your chest, then lowering it down quickly without touching the floor then repeat the process on a 5-minute time limit. How difficult would that be? It was a lung-busting work-out, very exciting to watch as these athletes would nearly not be able to thrust the bag up and seem to fall off the floor to a deafening wild roar of “go! go! go!” from the crowd!

My hats off to these warriors—these are some bunch of celebrities who are probably the strongest, most determined and most conditioned people in show business. They did things you never thought they could as they pushed, lifted, ran, bended, twisted, burpeed in ways like there was no tomorrow!

Indeed, they set out to prove that they were ambassadors of fitness, nothing less like the brand of gear all were wearing and the strength they exhibited, it needs no further justification!

Under Armour Megamall Launch: Part 1

With many well-known sports stores either closing shop or just plain downsizing, sportswear and apparel brand Under Armour seems to be on a roll, making its presence felt at the right places and at the right time. Under Armour’s first store at the Bonifacio High Street in Taguig which opened last May is doing largely well and has reportedly exceeded projected sales beyond expectations.

With this success and their iconic line of sporting gear and accessories selling like crazy, they have expanded to SM Megamall, launching another chic branch last October 22, 2014 with new styles and models being introduced.

UA Megamall facade

The Jazzrunner was invited anew for this launch in their 2nd store at the Ground Floor, Megamall, Bldg. A, and is just beside the Odyssey Music store. With crowds of guests and onlookers stationed at the entrance of the store, i made my way inside expecting their usual fare of shoes and garments but they had more than the usual, including new models of running shoes, dri-fit base layers, new shirt designs, training jackets and many more!

The store has this trendy look, similar in size to that of their BHS branch and their selection of sports gear seem to have expanded with many styles added to their products. This well-stocked sports house has the perfect pairing for functional sports gear for different sports like running and basketball and stylish off-sports look.

When considering your next set of running gear, like dri-fit tops, running shorts, sports bras, running caps and visors or even shoes at a store located in Megamall that has prices within your pocket’s reach, then the Under Armour Store should be at the top of your list!

I’ll be back with a short recap of the Under Armour Celebrity Cross-Fit Challenge which was a highlight of the store’s launch. The UA cross-fit challenge featured local tv and movie personalities flexing their muscles and pitting endurance against each other in a friendly competition on who’s the fittest and strongest. This will come out as Part 2 in a few days.

In the meantime, i’ll be leaving you with a sneak peek of Under Armour’s Megamall Branch.

The Under Armour Store at BHS: A Sneak Peek

If you’re a runner who’s tired of wearing the same old Adidas, Nike or New Balance apparels and wants to try out a new performance sports brand, then this place is for you! Yes, Under Armour is now officially open here at the Bonifacio High Street!

I was invited for the media launching of their first retail store at the Bonifacio High Street in Taguig and even before its presence here, news of its opening a full outlet in Manila was already creating a buzz among runners and multi-sport athletes. It’s a welcome alternative to the burgeoning presence of other well established brands in the country.

Skimming the interiors of the store, it’s a regal shop with great interior designs, it’s well stocked and the selection is impressive. Staff we spoke with are friendly and attentive (they should be, it’s a new store). It’s a good sized-store, not too big but not small by any measure.

Lots of dry fit/technical shirts, dry fit cotton shirts, compression shorts and tights, singlets, running socks, caps, shorts and an almost complete assemblage of their latest running shoes. They have a Hero Zone that features Marvel and DC comics-inspired shirts like the “S” Superman label.

This is a great and very refreshing addition to the usual specialty running stores located at Bonifacio Global City. Their prices? Very reasonable! Thumbs up!

Leaving you with a a sneak peek of  Under Armour’s flagship store!

RUNNR: Now Open In Alabang!

Located at the 2nd Level, Garden Wing, Alabang Town Center

This is going to be one great news for runners living in the south, particularly those from Alabang, Muntinlupa; Sucat in Paranaque; San Pedro, Laguna, Las Pinas City, Zapote and other outlying towns within the area. RUNNR Running store has just opened its doors at the Alabang Town Center (ATC) to cater the needs of these runners living near the area which saves them time from going further north at their store in The Fort, Taguig City.

Mr. Toby Claudio, RUNNR Founder and President located his store at the Garden Wing of ATC. It’s in a very good location, well within an affluent residential area (Ayala Alabang) and Mr. Claudio expects about 30 to 50% of business will be from standard mall traffic but will continue to be a destination store for runners looking for more specialized shoes and accessories.

I was fortunate enough to be invited to their launching last week and their store opening was marked by a running clinic they themselves organized with lectures coming from Takbo.ph head, Jinoe Gavan and a lecture on running technique by US-certified running coach Jay Valencia.

With shops firmly established at their Bonifacio High Street Main Branch, Trinoma and Ayala Center in Cebu which i had recently visited, RUNNR Alabang will continue to provide outstanding service and merchandize knowledge, the works in technical clothing and accessories and a hard to beat shoe selection at competitive prices.

Clearly, this new shop in Alabang Town Center is worth a run to the mall!

Press Release:

THE footrace fever in the country remains high as all roads lead to the south of the metro with RUNNR formally opening its doors in Alabang Town Center on Saturday, March 3, 2012.

RUNNR, the country’s first world-class running specialty store, and Ayala Mall’s Store of the Year in 2010,  brings state-of-the-art technology and a complete selection of  running brands to the premier business and residential area south of Manila, which has recently become the new favorite venue for running and other endurance events.

The revolutionary Footworx system –a combination of Footprint Analysis, High-speed Video Gait Analysis and Custom Insole Moulding services–has benefited a huge number of athletes since RUNNR brought the technology to the Philippines three years ago. Now with the new RUNNR at ATC, more running enthusiasts will get the help they need for improved performance and injury prevention.

The custom-fitting system helps runners identify the best shoe to match their foot type and stride, which helps them run longer and more comfortably. RUNNR carries several topnotch brands including Newton shoes–the choice of some of the world’s best triathletes–and CW-X compression wear.

RUNNR also offers other world-class brands such as Brooks, Adidas, Nike, Vibram Five Fingers, and New Balance. All the guesswork in picking and fitting the proper shoes are eliminated by the Footworx system and RUNNR’s highly-trained staff. Another huge plus is that everything that a runner needs, from sophisticated heart rate monitors to hydration equipment, are available at all RUNNR outlets.

“We want to inspire people to get into the running lifestyle by helping them find the right gear and teaching them the basics that will help them become better runners.” RUNNR is staffed by dedicated and skilled staffs who are runners themselves. They can help find the right shoe for each person’s specific Footype and even teach proper running form and training methods. Also available at RUNNR are world-class running gear and accessories from Polar, Smith Optics, Fuelbelt, Nathan, GU, CEP, Spenco, and Equipe.

The formal launch of RUNNR ATC was highlighted by an inspirational talk from Jineo Gavan of takbo.ph and a lecture on running technique by US-certified running coach Jay Valencia. Also present at the event were radio and television host Sam YG, actor JC De Vera, RUNNR Founder and President Toby Claudio and COO Jojo Claudio.

This March, RUNNR offers a special P1000 pesos off on footwear priced P4,995 and above when donating running singlets of any brand and from any fun run to RUNNR stores at Alabang Town Center, Bonifacio High Street, Trinoma, Ayala Center Cebu, and RUNNR corners in Toby’s Arena stores in Shangri-la Plaza, SM Mall of Asia and Abreeza Davao.

Donated running singlets, which will be given to the communities of Smokey Mountain, should be in good running condition. The RUNNR Alabang Town Center launch is presented by RUNNR and Alabang Town Center in cooperation with Newton, Brooks, CW-X, Smith Optics, Moving Comfort, Nike, Adidas, New Balance, and Zoot.

The newly opened RUNNR is located at the second level of The Garden in Alabang Town Center. For more on running and world-class running gear, visit www.runnr.com.ph, facebookcom/RUNNRPhils or newtonrunning.com or follow RUNNR on twitter.com/RUNNRStore.

Riovana: The SOUL of Running

I was suppose to blog the upcoming Run BGC 2011 for November 27 but thought about writing something on Coach Rio’s newest venture first, his new running store cum cafe cum shower room, cum everything else, the RIOVANA. There will be a soft opening this afternoon, the affair will be low-key and will showcase many running products not readily available at other running stores.

The first of many shops Coach Rio plans to open is located along 28th Street, corner 9th (near Honda) at BGC, site where many races start their runs and based on the interiors which was being hastily spruced up last night, it looks spacious and swanky that will surely attract runners when it comes to life.

Riovana will surely be the next gathering of runners. Consider that every Thursday evening at 6:00pm anywhere from 50 to 60 runners gather at A Running Circle (ARC) along Roxas Blvd. and not just to buy shoes and gear. ARC is the starting point for a weekly 5 to 15k runs so think about the BHS running crowd with the hundreds of runners training around the BGC at any given day (or night). It will be the ideal meet-up of running groups, an information or registration center for races and when buying your shoes, you get the knowledge of experts who’ll give advice to your every need as a runner.

I heard that they’ll provide locker rooms and shower facilities for runners who want to freshen-up after a run, for a fee, of course. It will also be a venue for running clinics and race launches and those who want to take a quick bite, they’ll serve some coffee, drinks and other delectable snacks.

With Jaimie Liu and Cooach Rio

The store’s tagline reads, “The Sole of Running”. But there’s more than putting pun out of a tagline. Coach Rio has been serving the needs of runners through the mostly excellent races he organizes, to running clinics that he conducts and to the products that he endorses which says a lot about his credibility and the trust people put into him. A top flight runner himself, he’s always in the offensive line of running success and serves in just about any imaginable capacity to keep the local running community going strong.

The guy with the afro hair is the core of the present running community. He is the SOUL of running. Peace, brother!

It's raining at Riovana!

ARC: More Than Just A Running Store

The only running store located in the city of Manila and a stone’s throw away from the running paths of Roxas Boulevard, A Runner’s Circle (ARC) seems to be enjoying its exclusivity in the area and content enough to cater to the running habitues of Manila and even beyond.

Two weeks ago, during the Condura Skyway Marathon, i bump into Raul Acuna, ARC’s local managing partner (while he was handing out free GUs to the runners along the marathon route) and he invited me to visit the store. This was going to be my second visit. The first time was during their opening launch last October and they had a still modest selection of products but has grown since then (read here).

But what caught my attention later was how the mission of the store has evolved over the months into much more than selling shoes and gear. It has supported some local runners through sponsorships by way of free running gear and entry fees. They even have sponsored some fun runs that starts from their store going to Rizal Park and back with overflowing snacks and drinks.

Although just a recreational runner, Raul even goes further by attending races and lends hand by giving out sports drinks and gels along the course to any runner who wants it. But Raul isn’t stopping here. He has some grand plans in the offing and will be more inter-active with the running community as well.

The group fun runs will continue and ARC will sponsor various running activities that will tap the main running clubs of Metro Manila. They will also provide seminars and clinics on everything about running from how to have the proper running form to getting motivation while injured. Raffle draws will be had.

To interact more with the runners, they will set-up an information center that will provide race applications, schedules, names of running clubs to join, recommend running coaches and sports doctors and point you to places for your runs. However, their main thrust is to continue to impart their wealth of experience, knowledge and insight into running and getting the right shoe for your fit and avoid running injuries.

Raul envisions ARC as a gathering place for runners where people can come in to hang-out and talk about everything from their upcoming race, their last work-out, the value of a new shoe and to talk about whose hot in their get-ups and crushes among the members.

So who says you can’t talk about your crushes too?

A Runner’s Circle: An Auspicious Manila Debut!

Guess who just checked-in?

The best running gear store in the Los Angeles (CA) area, “A Runner’s Circle ” (ARC) has now opened shop in Manila and they can be found at Unit H, Aloha Hotel, Quirino Avenue near corner Roxas Boulevard, Manila. Voted as the No. 1 Best running gear store by MyFox LA for 3 years in a row, this store has been a fixture to runners in the Los Angeles area and are known for their excellent customer service.

ARC hopes to duplicate their success in catering to the needs of our local runners who would gain from the expertise of their staff who have either manned their main branch in LA or received training from them.

Last Saturday, i arrived at their store to attend their soft opening as various running groups were gathered for a 5k run from their shop to the Luneta park and back. I was invited by Vimz ( kulitrunner) as part of a group of bloggers/runners to cover the event. When i arrived, the first runners were already arriving from their 5kms+ jaunt and soon followed by other runners who were all wearing their complimentary red dri-fit ARC shirt. I got mine too, thanks to Robin Sargan, one of the store’s Manila representative.

A nice, big breakfast followed and a group street dance was held attracting a small array of onlookers who were amazed at the early proceedings (see pictures below). To cap things off, 3 running shoes were raffled off among many others, and this really got all runners who attended, standing on their feet to listen for their names. Congratulations to Ambow, Grace and Ellen for winning the shoes!

According to Robin, more brands of running shoe models and gear will be made available and hopefully get one of the most sought after shoe brand in the US, the SAUCONY running shoe in Manila once again. Moreover, they would be conducting activities here like a weekly Saturday fun run, running related lectures, promoting running events and maybe more raffles during these activities!

A Runner’s Circle is a welcome addition to the still growing running boom here in Manila.

What’s Inside: Second Wind Running Store

A specialty running store should not only be about making a sell, packing up the merchandise after the customer pays for it and saying thank you when the customer exits the door. Though the clicking of the cash register shall remain as the store owner’s main objective, it is his relationship with the running community that will serve as his selling point in order for his store to prosper.

Thus, a running store (for runners) should also be the center of events for the local running scene. It’s where runners, from the beginning jogger to the elite marathoner and ultra-marathoner go for advise for the shoes that’s best for them; where to find the most popular running routes and running clubs of which one can join; check-out racing schedules and register for upcoming races;  join scheduled group LSD runs; seek training advice and just connect with other runners.

Store's Facade

Store's Facade

This is what Hector Yuzon, ultra-marathoner and President of Second Wind Running Store envisions on what his store would like to offer for the local running community. Yesterday on its opening day (March 28, 2009), my running buddy June and i made a visit to see what was in store. Upon entering, one would feel the running theme ambiance wherein scores of running bibs are prominently displayed at the right side entrance. Rows of running shoes are showcased on the walls with brands like New Balance, Mizuno and Asics. These shoes are well represented, all models and sizes seem to be in stock while rows of shoe boxes are positioned at the bottom of the display.

Whirlwind of bibs. Hey, i recognize you too!

However, very little seems to be in offer for running apparels with a small stock of New Balance dry-fit tech shirts and shorts on display. Hector explains that they’re still trying to build up the stocks as they intend to offer more brands in the future.

The Asics and NB running apparel

The Asics and NB running apparel

Also available are hand-held hydration kits, Power Gels which are reasonably priced, energy jelly beans which were introduced during the Condura Run and sports sunglasses of different models and varying prices. At the middle of the store is a treadmill that serves as a gait analyzer to try out shoes that’s best for your feet.

Second Wind President, Hector Yuzon. Always a helping hand

Always a helping hand

Second Wind’s level of commitment and involvement with runners are both promising and Hector Yuzon’s passion to serve out the sport he loves will be evident in the days, months and hopefully years ahead.
