Siargao International Marathon: July 23, 2017

Yes, this paradise island is part of Mindanao which is now under martial law as declared by President Duterte since a week ago, where Philippine military troops are still clashing with militants under the terrorist group Maute in Marawi.

However, Siargao Island is far removed from the present going-ons in Marawi and is known to be a peaceful and insurgency-free place with many tourists, both local and foreign trying to strut their wares in what the island is known for, surfing! Aside from hosting several international and local events in surfing, Siargao will also host an international marathon to be held on July 23, 2017.

The Siargao International Marathon (Run For The Mangroves) 2017 is a fundraising campaign organized by the Municipality of Del Carmen together with Runrio Events, Inc. and Open Space Media Inc. for the benefit of their mangrove rehabilitation in Del Carmen. This is the 1st Siargao International Marathon following the success of the first Siargao It Up! Marathon last year.

I’m very optimistic that this turbulence happening in Mindanao will end very soon and martial law will be lifted way before the event proper. Here’s to peace in Mindanao!

This Half-Marathon race at the SM Mall of Asia is going to be Sofitel’s first ever to be staged in this distance, a prelude to a bigger event next year where they plan to organize the Sofitel Manila International Marathon 2015! What a great way to kick off one new international marathon!

The half marathon will have an excellent team of volunteers and support staff along this course with a very nice finishers’ shirt for the half marathon runners! Gun start will be at 4:30am. Sofitel Philippine Plaza to revive the Sofitel Manila Half Marathon

Manila, June 3, 2014 – Sofitel Philippine Plaza announces the revival of the Sofitel Manila Half Marathon, last staged in 2008. The Sofitel Manila Half Marathon 2014 will feature 5k, 10k and 21k categories, and will be held at the Mall of Asia grounds.  Cash prizes and luxury prizes from Sofitel are at stake for the top three male and female winners of category.

“The Sofitel Manila Half Marathon aims to be at par with other international marathons such as the Boston Marathon or Singapore Marathon.  Aside from this, the greater aim of the event is to contribute to the upliftment of the lives of the street children of Manila through Virlanie Foundation, the beneficiary of the marathon.

In the last year, we have raised over Php 1. 5 million through the two runs we have organized – a part of the proceeds had been used to purchase a van that was handed over to the foundation for their activities. This year we are targeting to have over 6,000 runners and for better success in terms of fund raising. ” says Sofitel Philippine Plaza General Manager Adam Laker.

The race proponents of the Sofitel Manila Half Marathon

This marathon is dedicated to the children of Virlanie Foundation with the objective of contributing to a better future for the children of Manila.” saysCoach Rio de la Cruz.

The BGC Passion Fest And The Sole Racing Swags

It was quite a busy day for me at the Bonifacio Global City from early morning till mid-afternoon today. Had to meet our foreign principal at the F1 Hotel the whole morning and the talks ranged from the serious to the mundane and utterly ridiculous that i had to excuse myself just before they had their lunch break.

I had to make an excuse as i was rushing to the BGC Passionfest Launch at the nearby Lorenzo’s Way Restaurant at High Street. Got to dine many times at this nice resto and as always, you won’t miss the great food they serve there, specially the crispy tilapia, garlic chicken, pandan rice, vegetable rolls and their delicious and tender beef calderetta! Ohh yum!

Crispy fried tilapia, the Lorenzo’s Way

One of their specialties, Beef calderetta

The BGC Passionfest is a three-day event celebrating the 150th birth anniversary of one of the country’s national heroes, Andres Bonifacio. It bills as a modern fiesta filled with music, arts, food, culture and dance to be held from November 29 and 30 till December 1, 2013 at the Bonifacio High Street.

Co-inciding this event is the Takbonifacio 5k Run at BGC to be held on the afternoon of November 30 (same date with the Cavinti Trail marathon). More of the Passionfest in my next blog.

Capping my day at the BGC was an unscheduled stop at Riovana where me and my fellow bloggers were able to claim our Safeguard-2XU Sole Racing Kit and the freebies that came with it. Here’s what came with my race packet:

Sole racing swags

The 2XU Calf Compression i got came in color blue, the same color pictured of the 2XU visor. Nice!

  • Race Bib with IPICO timing card
  • Sole Running Leg 3 slippers : black
  • Water bottle: black
  • Black microfiber towel
  • 2XU calf guard – light blue (other colors: black, white and red)
  • 2XU visor – light blue (other colors: red, white)
  • 2XU cap – white (other colors: blue, red and white)
  • Safeguard lootbag

All runners who claimed their race packets this afternoon were able to get all of the items above and choose the colors for some.

If you’re registered for this run on Sunday, you better come early tomorrow at Riovana to claim your race packets  so as to be able to choose the colors you want on some of the items.

To those expecting of receiving a running shoe as part of the goodies promised by Runrio for those who registered for this leg, here is the explanation given by Coach Rio himself regarding the matter:

Dear Runners,

We are as excited as you are for this Sunday’s third and final leg of the Safeguard-2XU Sole Racing International Half Marathon series! We want to give you the best race experience possible and are working hard to do so.

We acknowledge our intention to provide Runrio running shoes at the end of this leg. To our disappointment and frustration, we experienced a problem with our Runrio running shoe supplier. Despite exhausting all means possible to resolve the problem, we are unable to launch the first-ever Runrio running shoes this year.

In exchange, Runrio will include the following additional items in your race kit :
-Runrio leg 3 slippers
-Runrio leg 3 water bottle
-Runrio black microfiber towel
-2XU calf guard (color of your choice*)
-2XU visor (color of your choice*)
-2XU cap (color of your choice*)
-Safeguard lootbag

*stocks per color are limited, so the earlier you claim your race kit, the more chances you have of getting your preferred color

We will also give a 40% refund from the registration fee you paid. Scheme is as follows:

Early registrants (Feb 4-17) – P1,000 refund
Regular registrants (Feb 18-Aug 3) – P1,400 refund
Late registrants (Aug 3 onwards) – P1,800 refund

Our race kit collection schedule at RIOVANA BGC at 9th cor 28th, Active Fun Building, Bonifacio Global City is as follows:

October 24 (12nn-8pm) – for early registrants only (Feb 4-17)
October 25 (12nn-8pm)
October 26 (10am-6pm)

We ask for your understanding with the difficult situation we faced. Rest assured that we exhausted all means to try to get the running shoes produced and delivered, to no avail.Nonetheless, we are excited to see you on Sunday, and we promise to deliver a quality race as always.

Coach Rio De La Cruz

Good luck to all running at this Sunday’s Safeguard-2XU Sole Racing at Nuvali!

Runrio Awards Night 2013

Finally, after two years of observing (with envy) runners getting up the stage to receive their awards for completing the Run United Trilogy Running series, it was finally my turn to summit the 5-foot high stage and received the coveted medal of honor, uhh… it’s actually a dog-chain medallion!

But no matter, it was one worth the recognition of having finished not only the trilogy, but a fourth culminating race, the full marathon!

The awards night has been staged for the past three years and for this particular awarding ceremony held at the SMX Convention Center at the Mall Of Asia in Pasay City last Saturday, April 6, yours truly and about 600 others were recognized for completing the Run United Trilogy series, the 21k-21k-32k and the final Run United Philippine Marathon (42k) all held last year.

This year’s awarding ceremony was surprisingly low-key with a Mardi Gras celebration as theme. Held in one big corner of Annex-1, the event was held simultaneously with other sports exhibitors in a Sports and Wellness festival. Gone is the grandiose banquet, elaborate stage, top band performers and my favorite beauty queen celebrities!

It may have been low in frills this year but that didn’t take away the meaning, prestige and honor it bestowed to us runners, an award not lost to those who painstakingly completed all four events to be given this accolade!

Thanks to Coach Rio Dela Cruz, Unilab Active Health and to Ms. Vimz Mendoza of Runrio Events who by the way, snagged the Best Blogger of the year award, a well-deserved recognition for her non-stop dissemination of all Runrio and other running events to the local running community!

I’ll leave you all with some pictures of the event. Cheers!

And finally, up on the stage with Coach Rio

Sin Tax P16.00 Run: December 16, 2012

This may be the cheapest registration fee for a local run i have ever encountered and organized by no less than the Runrio group themselves. For a measly sum of P16.00, runners can enjoy a well-organized race and includes a Runrio visor to all finishers.

The Sin Tax Run is a 6 KM run will take place on December 16, 2012 at the Seaside Boulevard, Mall Of Asia and the run is about supporting the pending sin tax reform bill in order to rationalize taxes on tobacco and liquor products. Taxes collected will be used to bankroll the government’s universal health care program that intends to provide better medical services for the poorest sectors of Philippine society.

This bill makes vice more expensive while at the same time raising more money for health care programs.

Only 5,00 runners will be accepted on a first come, first serve basis and is expected to be filled-up in a few days. A big surprise here is the hefty prize money that winners in the local and foreign divisions will received.

Check this out, then go out now and register!

Runew 2012 Is Back!

I vividly remember one of my first races at the McKinley Hill one February morning in 2009 where the starting line was located at an obscure area within McKinley that we had to ask for directions from security guards manning the buildings around. The start turns out to be at the back of the Chinese International School (who would have known as there were no markings on the school building).

That race, the RUNEW Race was one of the few 15k races i joined that year and remembering what fun it was running that distance.

From the RUNEW 2009 race with the group

This year, the RUNEW Race will be back on February 26 and will be held at the Filinvest Corporate City, Alabang, Muntinlupa City. This race is being organized by the Asian Hospital and Medical Center with Runrio as race director.

This race will help raise funds for the Asian Hospital Charities, Inc.’s charitable endeavors in sharing the Asian Hospital and Medical Center’s facilities and their doctor and staff’s expertise, time and energy to less fortunate patients and coordinate the provision of healthcare to beneficiaries by competent specialists.

Run United Goes Nationwide!

Finally, it’s great to know that RunRio will be bringing its Run United series to at least five provincial destinations and Davao City will be its first stop, bringing this mega race experience to one of the country’s premier cities in the south on Sunday, August 14, 2011.

So, mega-sponsor, Unilab is expanding its presence with these provincial series and the addition of key cities in Mindanao, the Visayas and up north in Luzon will be another great boon to running and will have an alternative to those who have been used to running the Milo Marathon provincial elimination series. Given the tremendous popularity of running spewing throughout, many runners can look forward in visiting these places not only for running but also for the change of scenery and the chance to explore the local culture and tourism it wants to showcase.

The Run United Series will feature runner-friendly courses with scenic routes and is tied-up with the various cities’ Tourism Departments to promote sports tourism.

The Davao Run will kick-off on August 14 and here are some details of this race:

Among the scheduled provincial races mentioned above, i have already earmarked Baguio City as the most likely leg i’ll be joining, being the most accessible and where most of my group of friends are running. Actually, i’ve already registered for it and i’m looking forward to racing there again which i last did way back during the 80’s where the Carmelo brothers of Baguio City ruled all their races there.

The launching of these provincial run series last night at the Kabisera at the BHS was one enjoyable evening with old runner friends. Although Rio was not there himself, the presence of Unilab’s Sports Representatives, the great food and freebies and the very interesting, free-wheeling question and answer segment more than made up his absence.

Running With The Docs And The Early Morning Party

Yesterday’s “Run With Doctors” 3k, 5k and 10k race was the first ever road running event of the Philippine College of Physician Foundation. I did the 5k run while my friends did the 10k. I was heading into the race with low expectations because i wasn’t really training enough for anything. Besides, running in hot weather makes me struggle a bit and often times, i’m too hesitant to push it and give an all-out effort knowing the outcome will not be too good.

So, yesterday’s event was a small race with no more than 1, 500 runners participating in all categories. It’s a simple 5k and 10k route within the MOA grounds and it’s a fast, flat course.

Some brief impressions:

  • A fast course, ideal for a PR run
  • Adequate water stations as always, although there were no Sports drinks this time
  • Not too crowded except in parts when you have to weave your way out from walkers
  • Race should have started earlier. The 5:50 start for the 10k and the 5k start 10 minutes later were a bit late as the sun was already up and we were already perspiring even before the race started.
  • Very organized run from start to finish though i wish they should have provided a bag to place the drinks and other freebies inside.
  • Race results here:

Here are some pictures of the event:

After the race, we hied off to Betty’s place for a long delayed celebration of Mel and Chito’s finish of the BDM 160km ultra-marathon. Great food and the Team Dilaw were all there.. boisterous, loud and almost tipsy at 11:00am. The group then agreed that the next serious run will be the Camsur Marathon this August.

Need to train…

A Goody Run

This recap of last Sunday’s The GOOD Run is now overdue as i was going through some busy patches the last several days, attending to some prospective tenants of a property in Las Pinas and attending some meetings and launches of several running events in the evenings as these race happenings have become more frequent.

It’s been almost a week since the GOOD Run but i’m still feeling delightful of running this great event. I entered the race with low expectations, having ran the Hyundai Run For A Cause (here) the day before and i was still reeling from the soreness of my heel.

I was planning to run Sunday’s 10k a little faster than my Hyundai run but after running the first kilometer, i knew that was unrealistic. Almost always, the first kilometer is a good indication on how well (or bad) you’re going to run the rest of the way.

The race start

I was surprised to see a good-enough turn-out for the race, well Coach Rio’s races always attract a good number of participants as the route ran similar to the Run United 10k Race, only it didn’t pass at the back of St. Luke’s Hospital anymore and instead went straight to Justice Drive on the way to 7th Avenue.

With very little training the week before, i struggled the last kilometer of the race but got to nip some runners at the final 20 meters before the finish, a habit i get to play and relish at end of races.:-)

It was enjoyable over-all, the race as usual was well organized and i can’t help but feel satisfied on the outcome of such a wonderful event.

Here are some photos of the race:
