PREVIEW: Salomon City Trail Manila on September 6, 2015

I was part of last year’s first ever Salomon CityTrail 12k Run inside and around historic Intramuros in Manila where you get to immerse yourself in the walled city’s vintage atmosphere from start to end!

The starting line was situated near the entrance of the iconic Fort Santiago where we were once brought as children on our first school field trip to study the life and death of our national hero, Dr. JP Rizal. And that race last year was like turning back the clock visiting this historical site from where Dr. Rizal spent his last few days. From here, the short 12k course is a veritable festival of historical sights.

So what is a CityTrail (or CityTrail running), one might ask? How could it be possible to have trails similar to Tanay, San Mateo or on wooded forests when this one is located in a highly urbanized, old city like Manila?

Well, it’s a venue event label by Salomon, the shoe brand that’s bringing us their new road to trail running shoes, the Salomon X-SCREAM 3D Running shoes. The  CITYTRAIL™ Races are part trail and mostly concrete running events that challenges runners to explore different terrain settings like pathways, bridges, tunnels, grass, stairs, etc. within urban landscapes simulating those in trail running. And what better venue to exemplify this than the historic Spanish and World War 2 settings of Intramuros!

Salomon X-SCREAM 3D

Those who missed the race last year will now have the chance to experience and re-live the last days of Dr. Jose Rizal, from his closed dungeon cell to his footpaths going to his execution site at nearby Rizal Park, the last TRAIL experience of one of the greatest Filipinos who ever lived!

Salomon Citytrail Manila 2015:

MAKE EVERY RUN AN ADVENTURE
In today’s fast-moving world, more people are looking into wellness in everyday living. Simple ways such as climbing stairs in a building, walking to work—a lot of city dwellers nowadays, want to infuse some form of exercise into their busy lifestyle. Most of these people are weekend warriors, having to escape the city in every opportunity for some adventure in the mountains, for some running on the trails. Salomon creates this interface of the outdoors within the urban setting—by bringing the trails to the city.

CITYTRAIL is Salomon’s approach to everyday running in the city. Recognized for technical leadership in trail running footwear, Salomon built CITYTRAIL as a way to escape running on the same route everyday. It began with an idea of re-creating the kinds of terrain and surface variations that is found in trail running, but in an urban landscape. Even the most avid trail runners want to vary their routine- a staircase, a steep hill, a bridge, or maybe linking different surfaces through a park, it just makes running more interesting.

The CITY TRAIL RUN is a global event that has been held in Europe, United States, and parts of Asia (Malaysia, Singapore, Hongkong, and Taiwan) to encourage runners to make their own trails in the city. This September 6, Salomon will take urban dwellers back to Intramuros, the heart of the Metro, the oldest City in the Philippines, perfect for an adventure run & rich with culture and heritage. The Citytrail Race Route will include running on different surfaces—pathways, roads, sidewalks, alleyways, bridges, stairs.

Suited for Citytrail Running, Salomon presents the X-SCREAM 3D and the SENSE MANTRA 3 footwear models, which combine the technology we’ve come to expect from Salomon. As the #1 brand in trail running, the same technology is infused in these Citytrail models—to bring out the best performance in running. Providing excellent foothold and comfort, they are constructed to have a firm grip on both hard and loose surfaces, perfect for varying terrains in the City.

Salomon held it’s Media Launch & Race briefing last Aug 19, 2015 at the R.O.X. Bonifacio High Street. Guests and media partners were briefed on the specifics of the CITY TRAIL RUN 2015- registration, time, venue, race routes, categories, prizes and requirements. Special prizes were also being raffled to some lucky participants of the media launch.

Salomon CITYTRAIL encourages all to find trails wherever they are, even in an urban environment. Step out of your routine, connect with your surroundings, and rediscover the joy of running. To find out more about CITY TRAIL RUN 2015, you can go to their Facebook page, or email salomon.ph@primergrp.com for any inquiries regarding this event.

Trail Chronicles #22: Salomon City Trail Intramuros Run

It was great to be part of this first ever Salomon CityTrail 12k Run inside and around historic Intramuros in Manila where you get to immerse yourself in the walled city’s vintage atmosphere from start to end!

The start line was situated near the entrance of the iconic Fort Santiago where we were once brought as children on our first school field trip to study the life and death of our national hero, Dr. JP Rizal. And that was the last time i ventured into this place. From here, the short 12k course is a veritable festival of historical sights.

So what is a CityTrail (or CityTrail running), one might ask? How could it be possible to have trails similar to Tanay, San Mateo or on wooded forests when this one is located in a highly urbanized, old city like Manila?

Well, it’s a venue event label by Salomon, the shoe brand that brought us their famous trail running shoes. The  CITYTRAIL™ Races are part trail and part concrete running events that challenges runners to explore different terrain settings like pathways, bridges, tunnels, grass, stairs, etc. within urban landscapes simulating those in trail running. And what better venue to exemplify this than the historic Spanish and World War 2 settings of Intramuros!

We were lined-up and took our positions at the back for the 4:30pm start with about 500 other 12k runners. I was with Terri Boyce, a Balikbayan friend and a marathoner who had just arrived from California for a very short visit. Seeing some of the old churches and Spanish-era buildings just a few minutes from the start, we decided to be  kitschy tourists and had to stop several times from running to snap some pictures on both sides of the road.

The 12k route is grand (on a small scale) and quite scenic taking both the old, unrestored ruins and the newly restored buildings into account. Among other things, we ran past the Palacio Del Gobernador, the just restored and re-opened Manila Metropolitan Cathedral, the San Agustin Church, Ayuntamiento, Revellin De Recoletos and through a lot of old elevated pathways, thick stone wall corridors and narrow streets in the oldest parts of the walled city.

Running the entire route leisurely took us more than 1.5 hours including the photograph breaks and chatting with the marshals who are also friends in the running community. And there were lots of stops where you can walk and just take pictures so this is a run where you just say the heck with the time and just enjoy the fresh ambiance of old Manila.

As for the race, it was well organized–water stops were plentiful and exceptionally managed as there were jugs separately for Gatorade and you can even have ice cubes, if you want. There were enough volunteers in each aide station ready to assist which were strategically positioned so there’s not a herd of people rushing to one area. The marshals were awesome, cheering us whenever we reached their stations (they were all friends, btw).

The only drawback of this race was that near the end of the 4th loop, some of the 12k runners were mis-guided to turn right towards the finish line when they should have been directed towards the last 2km loop thus missing the pink wrist band given somewhere on this loop that would have been a pre-requisite to get a medal.

Inspite of runners’ protest, volunteers at the medal tent won’t give the medals until they can show a pink wrist band. Well, given the ingenuity of runners, they came back to the volunteers after a few seconds dangling the pink band on their wrists! Go figure! 🙂

Over-all, it was a cool and decent race. Got this very nice medal, a nice box of snacks, there was a lot of interesting things to see on the route which I can’t say for other races.

I’ll give this race a rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars!!

SALOMON CITYTRAIL MANILA 2014

Whether you run for the thrill of it, to stay fit of healthy, or both, get ready for a more enjoyable running routine as Salomon promotes Citytrail running, inspired from its mountain trail running heritage. Alongside the launch of Salomon’s Citytrail products, the brand is happily prepping to host the first-ever event in the Philippines following its success in different countries including the U.S., and select countries in Europe and Asia such as Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.

After much deliberation, the Salomon Citytrail Manila is set to launch on September 7, 2014 at Intramuros, Manila.

The oldest city in the Philippines, The Walled City was deemed perfect for an adventure run that will not only be challenging and exciting with its dynamic urban landscape, but rich with culture and heritage as well. Even more enticing is the fact that the race starts at 4PM, which means the runners will experience all these amid the Manila sunset –the best time to explore and absorb the old fortress.

The sunset run is set to target at least 500 participants made up of adventure seekers, road runners, weekend warriors, fitness buffs, and trail running enthusiasts. Divided into two categories of 12km and 6km, the course will not be a conventional road run and will include challenges such as climbing stairs, crossing bridges, and clambering ramps around the Walled City.

Foot strikes on different surfaces, ascends on bridges and stairs will stimulate trail running skills while rediscovering Philippine heritage and culture. Salomon brand ambassadors, Philippine Sky Runners & Suunto Athletes will be the assigned to selected areas to marshal and guide the participants in the running tour. The cutoff time for the whole race is two hours.

The registration will be open from August 1 to August 29 at the Salomon stores and August 30 to September 5 at R.O.X. Bonifacio High Street. Participants may also register online ( http://www.runnersrunner.com/2014sctp/).

The fee is P900 and P1,200 respectively for the 6km and 12km categories. All registrants will get a race bib, timing chip, Salomon Citytrail singlet, Citytrail cap, post race meal and a historical running tour of Intramuros City. 12km finishers will get a Citytrail Finisher’s medal.

Top three male and female winners per distance will be awarded with R.O.X. gift certificates, Salomon products, and other freebies. Salomon items and products from sponsors will also be given away to lucky participants on the day of the event.

Fortunately, participants need not to worry because substantial parking spaces will be made available within the venue. Plus, a baggage counter will be situated within the Start/Finish area in Fort Santiago where race participants may leave their belongings.

Salomon Citytrail Manila is a green run as it promotes sustainability and environmental preservation. No disposables will be given throughout the race course. Gatorade dispensers and water jugs will be stationed around the road areas of Intramuros City.

In line with Salomon’s campaign to “Elevate Your Run”, it is through the Citytrail event and its latest Citytrail footwear that Salomon aspires to introduce Citytrail running as an urban alternative to trail running.

A global event meant to entice everyone to “Elevate Your Run”, Citytrail running is all about being creative and imaginative when it comes to making your own trails in the city. It involves making use of the different surfaces within the city like pathways, roads, sidewalks, alleyways, bridges, stairs, et cetera to keep the experience exciting and more challenging.
