Double Terrain Challenge (10km / 25km) Trail Run: August 6, 2017

Be Trail Ready Presents ::.. Double Terrain Challenge (10Km/25Km)

Image may contain: text

10/Km and 25 Km Challenge

The thought of running through forest woods, rocky and muddy uphills and downhills, dirt roads for four or seven hours may not appeal to some, specially those who are still new to trail running but, for all its technicalities, this will be a well-organized and smoothly-run event, thanks to Race Director Dabobong Angeles and his new team “Be Trail Ready (BTR)” Events who has been at the forefront in staging short but challenging trail races near Metro Manila for the past 5 years.

Mountain passes, single track trails, water falls, raffle prizes, free food along the route and at the finish all help create a party atmosphere . And while some consider his longer distance offerings as hard-core and elite, the shorter one (10k) will be easier, manageable and will aim to attract more trail running newbies and other runners hailing from different levels.  The race’s start and finish near the vicinity of Baranggay Cuyambay, Tanay just adds to the “fiesta” factor. A 5am start should see you at the finish line in time for a well-earned medal and breakfast on the foot of this lively mountain municipality of Tanay.

Mt. Sembrano Trail Challenge 2017: March 12, 2017

It’s not an easy trail route, but those who have experienced traversing uphill trails whether you’re a newbie or a veteran trail runner, would find running, hiking or just trying to survive to get to the top of Mt. Sembrano the harsh yet thrilling experience of conquering it on limited time.

Running this race for the very first time two years ago, i kind of wondered how i was able to wrestle the unlimited uphills, specially the first 5 kilometers of continuous climbing on gnarly rocky trails. Still, i think this was one of the best trail races for 2015 (didn’t join last year because of severe acid reflux) even with the negligible blips of getting lost and suffering from cramps that made this race even more exciting.

Image may contain: cloud and outdoor

The Mt. Sembrano Mountain Run is going to be back this coming March 12, 2017 with some new trail routes being added. This is a no frills, all thrills race but has the unique stamp of an MGM event, organizers of this race. It has full of support, unique swags, fabulous finisher’s shirt, food and an after event gathering of pure trail enthusiasts hobnobbing with first time trail runners wanting to catch on the frenzy of their newfound sport.

This mountain run is not for people who are looking to set a fast pace but I would recommend it to those looking to deviate from road events and challenge themselves with a difficult but doable trail run, specially the newbie trail runner.

Getting to the top of Mt. Sembrano and reaching the finish-line will give you a sense of great euphoria and that’s definitely the case here, as this was one of the most grueling yet rewarding trail races I’ve done.

If you haven’s registered yet, you have a little more than a week to register (deadline on February 17) and can close even earlier if slots have all been filled up.

Sierra Trail Adventure Race- October 16, 2016: A Sneak Peek

In the mountains of Tanay, one place holds a special allure to those who have ran its trails and crossed its rivers…the rugged scenery of Sitio Maysawa and Laiban. If you have ran any of PIMCO’s Natures Trail Discovery Run (NTDR) trail series a few years ago, you just might have passed some of its rocky terrain, steep uphills and an abundance of streams and rivers that greets you endlessly along its course.

This October 16, 2016, the inaugural trail race of Pinoy Trails.com and Rundezvous will hold the 1st SIERRA TRAIL ADVENTURE RACE (STAR) 2016 in Tanay, Rizal which will have an 8k, 12k, an 18k- solo, and an 18k 2-man buddy run. The race will start and end at the Ten Cents To Heaven Resort, Sitio Mayagay, Cuyambay, Tanay, Rizal.

Two weeks ago, The Pinoy Trails Team made an ocular visit on these trails as we last did during another familiarization run with trail buddies Jun and Franc. The Maysawa trails are beautiful but jagged, rocky on some parts, wooded on the inner portions  following shallow but crystal clear rivers plus a couple of different ridges through the woods. It throws in a couple of relentless uphills and descents. The terrain on the end part, after reaching Brgy Laiban is a mix of woodlands, creeks, open spaces and the occasional cultivated field.

The Maysawa-Laiban trails are a must place to run in Tanay with ascents and descents that your hearts will beat in excitement. It will be both hard and pleasant at this time of the year but with the onset of the wet season, don’t let the rains deter you!

Looking At The Route: Soleus Cross Country Challenge 2016

I’ve ran this route several times, both in training and during races and the course is truly unique with all the trimmings of a great trail run. From the casual runner/walker to the serious trail runner, this route of the Soleus Cross Country Trail Run Challenge, to be held on July 10, 2016 at Pintong Bukawe, San Mateo, Rizal has something for everyone: river crossings, single-track trails and fire roads, woods, unrelenting uphills and downhills, farm fields, and magnificent views of the Sierra Madre mountains!

Just recently, Judith Staples of L-Timestudio and Coach Roel Amabao-Ano, the event’s Race Director led a test run of the route comprising of members of Team Soleus and some friends in the trail running community. I absolutely love the views along the trails with the backdrop of the Ten Commandments tablets at Mt. Sinai serving as the starting point of the run.

The single track trails and the main fire road descends into the Casile River for roughly 5 kms., crossing this river a few times before turning around and heading back uphill which will be long and arduous climb. Nevertheless, it will all be worth the pain and effort if you love being challenged with all those magnificent views as backdrop. The Soleus Cross Country Challenge will offer 21k and 12k distances.

(See registration details below).

Here’s a sneak preview of the route with Team Soleus:

Bravehearts Mountain Trail Run- March 12, 2016

“Bravehearts is a newbie friendly trail run”.

“This is not a race. Its a picnic!”

“It requires bravery to do something no one else around you is doing. So be brave!”

—MGM Productions description of their upcoming trail run event, the Braveheart Trail Run

To which trail runners responded:

“It’s A Trap!”

I was amused and laughing when i read these Facebook exchanges on the forthcoming BRAVEHEARTS Mountain Trail Run to be held on March 12 in Baras, Rizal. It might be MGM’s stab at humor but knowing their record of organizing very challenging routes that frays the edges of your patience (Mt. Batolusong Trail Challenge, Mt. Sembrano Mountain Run, to name a few), their races are no laughing matter. For most, their uphill courses gets your heart pumping non-stop, yet the views are spectacular that any trail runner would love to come back for more.

Though the Braveheart Mountain Run will only be for 11 kilometers, no one (outside of the MGM organizers) have made an actual test run of this route but expect this to be another lung-busting climb. If MGM is going to be true to their word, this run will just be like a picnic at the park and will have a newbie-friendly trail route. But then, they ask runners to be brave, to face the unexpected! And that has put jitters among the trail newbies and even the regular trail runners.

Nevertheless, Race Director Rayman (DBB) Delos Angeles assured that runners will be rewarded with a myriad of adventurous panoramas like waterfalls, dams, rocky paths, pine trees, the grand views of the Sierra Madre mountains and Talim Island at Laguna De Bay which i tend to believe (check out the pictures below).

It’s a very calming claim to call an MGM Productions event one newbie-friendly trail run but it’s also hard to ignore that one requires bravery to do something out of the ordinary to probably survive this race. Even the name of a waterfall where runners will pass by near it, “KINAMATAYAN FALLS” is a prelude of things to happen!

But factor in a cool dip beneath this waterfall (will you?), enjoy the low clouds lying below the Sierra mountain peaks, cascading rivers and streams and a grand finale of a breakfast at one of the picnic tables of a resort while getting a glimpse of Laguna De Bay and you’ve got plenty of reason to enjoy this race.

Whether or not it’s a newbie-friendly trail or a race for the hard-core, no trail runner will want to miss a MGM-organized trail run! Hope we come out alive! 🙂

Here are the details of the race!

A Taste of Antique Trails (ATAT): Antique’s First 10K Trail Race

This trail race will be held on January 10, 2015 where the weather will be generally cool during this time and makes for a great race atmosphere. THE ROUTE

The route is not so technical but is enough to give runners the real challenge of trail running. It is compose of 1.5 km cemented road before it enters another few kilometers of dirt, aggregate road with some sharp stones approaching the muddy uphills. It is advisable to wear road-to-trail running shoes. There are parts of steep descend which is so slippery especially when it rains then followed by river crossings. Expect to get wet.

Rivers are located somewhere about km 7-8. It’s perfect to soak in the fresh water to freshen up those tired legs and cool down the hot body temperature. The highlight would be the steel suspension bridge or the hanging bridge. Runners are advised to walk across it as the vibration makes it hard to run especially if many runners would cross at the same time.

A Sneak Peek of The Mt. Marami To Pico De Loro Trail Traverse

Amazing, scenic, hard-core and more! Words to describe how we experienced hiking and running for more than 13 hours coming from Baranggay Talipusngo, Maragondon, Cavite going to the base of Mt. Marami that traverses straight to Pico De Loro—-trekking a seldom used route mountaineers had utilized years ago. My co-trail runners and I had assumed that the trek will last just 5 or 6 hours at the most so we scrimped on bringing more supplies than what we had prepared for and sort of paid the price of being dehydrated for a couple of kilometers.

Then again, with my years of adventure for joining runs, hikes and races on undiscovered or least known trails, i decided to join this Test Run organized by Race Director JC Igos to drum up support to his group’s upcoming race, the “Beautiful Horizon, Silyang Bato-Pico De Loro 35km Trail Run” to be held on December 20, 2015.

The route passes through the rugged terrain of Mt. Mataas Na Gulod, Mt. Palay-Palay before ascending to the jump-off to Pico De Loro. It was my first time running this route as well with most of the others while i’ve had in two other occasions tipped the apex of Mt. Marami so i kind of knew what i was getting into.

If trails could be awarded a star for its breath of scenery and its arduous paths, then this place comes close to earning 10 perfect stars. Runners who will join this race will surely gasp for breath not only for the raw, mesmerizing vistas but also for the arduous route that will see them crossing rivers, climbing up dozens of hilly terrain,  exploring deep virgin forests and running single-track trails (some covered with foliage) in their natural form.

A limited field of runners including some from overseas will be put to tasked in running what is probably one of the most beautiful stretches of forest trails in the whole of Maragondon and Ternate in Cavite. The seemingly endless rugged terrain will transport you past grasslands with wild flowers, bended bamboo groves with cows intermittently seen lurking by.

Trekking the Anino River is an experience on its own. Located inside an old growth forest, the river is mainly untouched that extends up to a kilometer of low streaming waters. The forest is mostly dark, has thick growth and is eerily quiet if you set out alone, so the only light that can be seen inside the forest is a collection of sunbeams. I urge you to stay in groups while crossing its streams.

If you plan of setting up a reconnaissance run to get a feel of the route, i suggest to bring loads of water and food as there will be no available water between the traverse of Mt. Marami and Mt. Pico De Loro except from flowing water from an upstream source near the foot of Anino River. Also bring a flashlight or head-lamp as you may arrive at the Pico De Loro jump-off site near early evening. A fully-charged cellphone and some money is a must!

Details of registration can be viewed here: https://jazzrunner.wordpress.com/2015/10/30/preview-the-beautiful-horizon-trail-run-traverse/

Here are some pictures of the trails which i hope will be useful for this trail race! Enjoy!
