World of DC Comics All Star Fun Run: April 18, 2015 At The Mall of Asia

BATMAN:   The time has come. You know it in your soul, for I am your soul… You cannot escape me! You are puny, you are small, you are nothing–a hollow shell, a rusty trap that cannot hold me! Smoldering, I burn you — burning you, I flare, hot and bright and fierce and beautiful. You cannot stop me, not with wine or vows or the weight of age — you cannot stop me, but still you try. Still you run. You try to drown me out… But your voice is weak.

JOKER:   Batman. Darling.  Should sleep. Should be fresh tomorrow. Tomorrow I go free.

SUPERMAN:    Bruce, you idiot! You’ll ruin everything. For all of us! The rest of us learned to cope. The rest of us recognized the danger–of the endless envy of those not blessed. Diana went back to her people. Hal went to the stars. And I have walked the razor’s edge for so long… But you, Bruce–you, with your wild obsession!

JOKER:    They could put me in a helicopter and fly me up into the air and line up the bodies head to toe on the ground in delightful geometric patterns like an endless June Taylor dancers routine — And it would never be enough. Hahah….

SUPERMAN:    They’ll kill us if they can, Bruce. Every year they grow smaller. Every year they hate us more. We must not remind them that giants walk the earth!

BATMAN:     Welcome to Hell!!!

(“The Dark Knight Returns”–2012)

This may well be one of the dramatic confrontation that will usher the forthcoming World of DC Comics All Star Fun Run on April 18, 2015 at SM By the Bay, SM MOA which will feature our all time favorite super heroes like Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash and many others!

Expect this run to be full of super hero runners, cos-players (maybe Zorro of UP will be there too) and many more costumed super hero lovers and charlatans who will dominate the roads around Mall of Asia!

Follow the details below on how to register!

Shoe Review: Maxxed Flight 101 Running Shoes

Maxxed Flight 101 Running Shoes

BACKGROUNDER:

Neutral Trainer:

  • Recommended for about any type of runner who needs medial support and a responsive ride
  • Good second shoe for long-slow distance runs, fast-paced training and short to mid-distance racing
  • Geared towards heel strikers that offers propulsion from heel transition to toe-off
  • Weight: 12.5 oz.

Adidas Springblade Ignite

The Maxxed Flight 101 is a radically different running shoe from any other shoe you may have worn because of its heel blades. Well, it’s basically similar to the Adidas Springblade Ignite running shoes that runs from the heel up to the midfoot (The Adidas Springblade Drive 2 stretches up to the forefoot) which claims to give runners a spring- like feel when running.

CONSTRUCTION:

The upper is made up of mostly synthetic plastic overlays, a stretchable and breathable mesh located on its tongue with soft cushioning underneath that hugs the top of the foot comfortably. The foam stretches from the midfoot to the heel part for protection from chaffing and bumps.

The midsole which is mostly concentrated on the forefoot is made of phylon which gives an elastic but firm cushioning. The Flight 101 has a unique insole as underneath it is a molded, cell-chamber which traps air pressure and enhances cushioning.

The heel blades, numbering to 9 pieces comes with rubber pads protecting each hard plastic blade that directly contacts the ground.

View of the sides

The insoles of the Flight 101

The cell-like chambers of the insole which gives its cushioning properties

FIT AND FEEL:

This is probably the shoes’ strongest point, its secured fit and comfortable feel. It packs enough cushioning on the heel part to where the blades are located although there’s not much around the forefoot area.

There’s just one slight annoying characteristic to it—that is the “squeaking” sound it produces whenever you start walking or slow down to a jog that runners beside you will immediately notice! Comments like “sounds like a baby shoe” or “you should attach blinking lights to it” are always a constant. I hope this “quack” sound dissipates as the shoe accumulates more mileage.

A closer look of the heel blades

Out of the box

PERFORMANCE:

Surprisingly, the shoe was responsive enough for fast-paced running! It had a plush ride although the cushioning dissipates when you shift from the mid-foot to toe-off just like racing flats. I’ve used this on three occasions logging a total of about 45 kms.

On those occasions, the heel and midfoot fit are quite snug but the forefoot opens up a bit to the stretchable upper layer of the shoe. However, all the cushiony-feel when toeing-off as mentioned  disappears as you could feel the surface of the road when running which may be a good thing for faster runners or a bad one for those looking for an all-out cushioned running shoe.

There’s very little about the energy rebound that this shoe purportedly does but the slight spring-like propulsion gives a tinge of a quick toe-off but is marginal when you’re at high speeds.

Well-cushioned inner pads

Heel Blades

HIGHEST AND BEST USE:

If you have been hesitant about wearing this type of shoe because of its unorthodox outsole style, you’ll be on surprisingly solid ground with the Flight 101. It is ideal for short to mid-distance runs as well as fast-paced running for just about any level or type of runner.

Areas For Improvement:

Just two things that don’t sit well with me about this shoe is firstly, the squeaking sound it produces while walking or running slowly and second, the hefty price tag which is presently pegged at P6,999.00. Maxxed should reconsider its pricing so it can be made more affordable for the running enthusiasts.

A Daughter’s Love: 5k Run/Walk For A Cause

We all know the devastation the big C (Cancer) brings to someone who is stricken by the disease, the helplessness  of the patient’s family, overwhelmed by the large financial costs it entails to treat them in hospitals and the stigma that is attached to this disease.

Ms. Ae Palomares, a runner is reaching out on your good hearts for financial help to defray part of the expenses needed in the hospitalization of her father who is stricken with cancer. Fighting cancer is a tough battle, to say the least and it will take more than time, care, sweat and tears to overcome the pain that her father and family is presently going through.

Ae and her father

It is with this financial concern that the Palomares family with the help of A Runners Circle (ARC) have joined together in staging a benefit run, A Daughter’s Love 5k Run/Walk For A Cause on March 28, 2015 to raise money and defray the costs of medicines and hospital care. The run will start at the ARC Store, Roxas Blvd., going to CCP Complex up to the GSIS/Senate Compound then make a U-turn going back to ARC.

The running community is now enjoined to help in this cause by registering in this race and donating a token of P250.00 per entry. However, runners may donate for ANY amount they can afford! Each and every PESO counts! Any contribution will help–no matter how small!

It is the least we can do to help a co-runner, to give her less worry and a little peace of mind.

For additional information, you can call Ae Palomares at 0926-3173412.

Coach Roel’s ULTRA Ten Mile Challenge: March 28, 2015

In my books, Coach Roel’s 2nd Wall To Shotgun 10 Miler was one of the best races held last year if you were looking for that not-so-competitive, super camaraderie, breath of fresh air kind of race. Those familiar with Timberland’s “The Wall” know about its lung-busting killer hills but surprisingly, many runners, including myself savored the arduous route and were all unanimous in praising this well organized race!

This coming March 28, 2015, Coach Roel is bringing his 10 Miler race in the commercial-residential confines of Pasig City and will start at the Philippine Sports Complex, ULTRA Track oval that will pass through Green Meadows, Temple Drive, White Plains Ave., Lanuza and Julia Vargas Avenues.

The Ten-Miler race dubbed as Ultra Coach Roel Birthday Run3 10-Mile Challenge will include a 5k, 3k, 4×100 and a 4×400 meter relay race which will see the likes of celebrities Iza Calzado, Karylle and Divine Lee who will be running with kids of Sto. Nino, Baranggay Liksi, Pasig City.

Highlight of the event is a boodle fight breakfast which will likely be a feast of Lechon (roast pig)!

Pro Earth Run 2015: April 25, 2015 at MOA

The question that begs to be answered is what have you done for mother Earth lately?

People are now feeling the effects of global warming not because that is the way nature planned it but because the defenses built in her to protect us and give us safe haven, may have ceased to exist due to the wounds and scars that man himself inflicts on her.

As more people are becoming environmentally conscious, we should also do our part in creating an Eco-friendly society.

It is in this advocacy that the Pro Earth Run 2015, a 10k, 5k and 3k race to be held on April 25, 2015 at the MOA grounds  is being held once again to encourage people to do their part in producing a cleaner and greener earth so we can still change the course of the earth’s future.

The Sierra 51050-50k Relay and Half-Marathon: A Short Race Recap

Taking our time at the Sierra Relay and Half-Marathon in Tanay, Rizal. (Photo by Running Jack Morales)

As a runner who has frequently ran the roads and trails of Tanay, i definitely supported the Sierra 51050 Relay and Half-Marathon as it brought many to see all the great scenery (and run-walk the killer hills) Tanay has to offer!

The race venue was at the Ten Cents To Heaven Resort, a previous starting venue of a trail race i once participated in. Race started on an easy downhill slope but the fast yet easy stroll over a secondary concrete road turns havoc when you start climbing it back and it’s about 2 kms of continuous uphill to get to the main highway. After that, you’re in for another 16 kilometers of rolling hills!

Having ran a 16-kilometer training run the day before, and a 10k tempo run 2 days prior, i ran this race at a very relaxed pace, taking it easy on the downhills and walking the steepest uphills on a brisk pace, whenever possible. No hurries!

There’s really no easy way to describe running the Sierra 51050. Organized by Rundezvous Events, it is just something you have to experience yourself:

  • Great venue for the race start and finish–the Ten Cents To Heaven Resort which is high above the mountains with a nice view of the Sierra Madre mountain range.

By the pool of Ten Cents To Heaven Resort

  • Cool Baguio-like weather greeting the runners as they preferred to huddle inside the hall to keep warm rather than venturing outside just before race start.
  • Major sponsors with their booths lined-up before the start. Freebies galore after the race. Thanks to Maxxed Running shoes, Light Water and Nutri Bar!
  • Running and chatting with two “fabulous” running divas-bloggers with talks ranging from bird collection to ultramarathons. Chatting to these two made walking the uphills easier.

With the two Divas, Cheapanngang Diva and the Running Diva

At a water station along Marcos Highway

  • Looking at all the Harley Davidsons and other powerful 500 cc motorbikes zoom past you along the highway.
  • Beautiful backdrops whichever way you look. There’s always something new to gaze at and scenery seem to constantly change every 10 seconds.

Along the race route

Refreshing rural settings

  • Looking at the relay runners tough it out with their support vehicles nearby shouting them some encouragements.
  • Adequate water at various aid stations except for the last turn-around when they ran out of it.
  • Making a new friend along the route where we discussed common friends, injuries and a hustler RD.

Hello to you again, Ms. Ae!

  • A very festive atmosphere during the awarding ceremonies as gift of sponsors were raffled off! Too bad i didn’t win the Spyder Optic Shades.
  • Finishers medal was nice, and the Finishers’ shirt was awesome! Hope they make it into a dri-fit shirt next time!
  • Very dedicated race organizers who did a great job, despite the finish line fiasco which affected some of the leading runners. Congrats to Pedz, the “Running Atom”, Chris, Abet, Allan, Za, Irish, Nette and the whole Rundezvous Team.

If you live somewhere in the Metro Manila area and would like to go to out-of-town races which doesn’t take much time traveling too much, then this is DEFINITELY a race to check out not only because of its positive vibe, but because Tanay is a fun and cool place to be too!

TakBOKASYON: Run For The Seminarians

NatGeo Earth Day Marathon : April 26, 2015

I was able to run and finish the inaugural NatGeo Earth Day Run  42k Marathon distance which they added last year and i still vividly remember how well organized this race turned out to be. Ice-cold water and Pocari almost every two kilometers, enthusiastic and courteous marshals and the ever present medics–they did a hell of a job, all made a huge difference for making last year’s race an over-all success!

This year’s race, the NatGeo Earth Day Run 2015 will be held on APRIL 26, 2015 at the Mall of Asia grounds. On-line registration is now open while in-store registration starts on March 16, 2015. One major change for this year’s edition is that this race will now be organized and directed by RUNRIO so expect this to be as well-staged as last year’s event.

Now on its 6th year, the National Geographic (Nat Geo) Earth Day Run is expected to attract more than 20,000 running enthusiasts of all ages and fitness levels to participate for the good of the environment.

NatGeo Run 2015 Race Organizer Coach Rio dela Cruz giving out details of this year’s race edition during last night’s race launching

This year, Nat Geo is working once again with its environmental partner, World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), to make a solid difference in the Philippines’ environmental footprint and give sustainable livelihood opportunities for local communities. Proceeds of this run will help improve the livelihood of the minority Mangyans of Occidental Mindoro and for the protection and conservation of the nearly extinct Tamaraw animals.

Asics AP01 SPM Training Watch: A Short Review

Asics AP01 SPM Training Watch

One of the latest addition to L-Time Studio Boutique’s array of its sports watch collection is the Asics AP01 SPM Training Watch and it has plenty of meat to its slim, sporty frame. Quietly introduced locally last 2013, this watch made a resounding debut last February 1, 2015 when the L-Time Studio (cum Soleus) Runners wore this watch and the Team shirt during the Condura Skyway Marathon.

Asics sports watches have become very popular in many countries specially for young athletes who are into running, biking and racing. It’s no wonder why many Japanese athletes are into it’s concept and have embraced it as their sports watch of choice. The AP01 has a unique style and purpose in the Asics line with very interesting specifications that is less about being fashionable and more about being reliable and useful.

“ASICS watches are designed in the tradition of the technologically advanced, high-quality ASICS shoes that have earned the allegiance of many of the world’s top athletes. Their run training watches, which include the AP01 and AH01, have been developed in collaboration with the ASICS Institute of Science in Kobe, Japan.

The goal and objective of the ASICS Institute of Sport Science is to research, study, and analyze the biomechanics and movement of the human body. All of this work is done for the main goal of improving the training, performance, and enjoyment of both professional and recreational athletes all over the world”, as quoted from the Asics Institute of Sports Science.

Now, let’s see what this particular watch does. With all the functions and cues this watch was meant to represent, the AP01 SPM is meant for running. Everything about this watch directs you to train properly and judiciously. It’s stylish but rugged appearance points you to its three (3) stellar features:

The AP01 SPM Trainer very accurately measures your steps per minute (SPM) and Speed and Distance while you run so you can learn your optimal running stride rate. It manages your pace, running efficiency and reduce the risk of over striding.

SPM Function:

By sensing with the built-in sensor the acceleration generated in the runner’s body during running, this watch measures the number of steps taken, and converts it into the SPM Data (the number of steps taken in 1 minute). It also enables you to control the exercise intensity during running. Using the SPM Data and the data measured with the 1/100 sec chronograph function in combination, you can run in different paces, either faster or slower than usual as desired.

PACE and Distance Function:

Using the algorithm developed by ASICS Institute of Sports Science, this watch can estimate the running pace and the distance run on the basis of the SPM measure during running. The estimate of the distance varies depending on the course and weather conditions and it should be noted that it serves as a general guideline only.

Shoes Impact Meter Function:

You can see how worn out your shoes are from the conditions of the outsole and the upper, but it is difficult to know to what extent the cushioning performance of your shoes have deteriorated. The Shoes Impact Meter indicates the reduction in cushioning performance of your shoes using an index based on such data as total number of steps.
